Punjab Kings (PBKS) is currently in 8th place in the points table Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. With just three wins from eight games so far, PBKS’ performance in the 17th season of the lucrative league has been disappointing.
Still in the race to qualify for the playoffs
Despite their disappointing performance, PBKS still hopes to secure a spot in the IPL 2024 playoffs. With five games left in the league phase, they have little chance of qualifying. However, this would require a remarkable turnaround in their form and fortunes.
Qualification scenario for PBKS
In order for PBKS to secure a spot in the playoffs, they must manage their remaining games precisely while taking into account the performance of the other teams in the league. This is how PBKS can still qualify for the playoffs:
- PBKS wins: PBKS must win at least 4 of its remaining 5 games to have a realistic chance of qualifying for the playoffs. However, the chance of losing even a single game is significantly reduced. Therefore, it would be best if PBKS wins all its games.

- Stop LSG: LSG shouldn’t win more than one game this season as they have a good chance of finishing in the top four.
- CSK, DC and GT: CSK, currently ranked 5th in the team, should lose 4 of their 6 remaining games while DC and GT should lose at least 3 of their remaining 5 games.
- Scenario explanation: If PBKS gets four wins, they are expected to collect 14 points. This offers them a potential route to qualification if the top three teams limit their points to 16 each, preventing a significant lead. Additionally, limiting other teams to 12 points or less ensures PBKS remains competitive. Through a strategic approach and consistent performances, PBKS can maintain its playoff ambitions and maintain its presence in the later stages of the tournament.

PBKS’ path to the playoffs remains unclear even if those criteria are met. Their existing Net Run Rate (NRR), which is particularly low in the league, represents a significant hurdle. They have to rely not only on their wins, but also on significant losses from the teams above them.
