While many Bollywood fans are aware of the relationship between Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan years ago before they found love again in Mira Rajput and Saif Ali Khan, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali witnessed the couple’s breakup during the filming of theirs biggest blockbuster took place Yep, we met. The romantic comedy, which was not only a blockbuster but is still considered a cult classic today, catapulted her career to the top once again, but the couple also parted ways in their private lives.
Imtiaz Ali recalls the time when Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan broke up during the shooting of ‘Jab We Met’; says: “You were absolutely professional”
Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali opened up about this in a recent conversation and claimed that despite their tumultuous relationship during the making of the film and subsequent breakup, none of it had any impact on the shoot and the two actors were professional through and through. “Most of the film has been shot. There were two days after their so-called breakup that we had to shoot. They were completely professional. No flaw, nothing whatsoever, whatever happens in her personal life,” he told Galatta India.
He further spoke about the “not so successful” professional phase that the two actors were going through at that point in their career and added, “At that time, Shahid and Kareena were not doing very well. But these ups and downs happen all the time in the lives of filmmakers and actors. But as filmmakers we don’t have to speculate like the stock market and judge what we think is right for a particular role and that’s the only thing that works. This is the learning of a lifetime.”
Talking about how Jab We Met was the most rejected film in his life, Imtiaz also revealed that he initially wanted to do the film with Bobby Deol and Preity Zinta but it didn’t materialize. He shared, “Bobby was busy with other work, so I thought, let it be, let’s not do this film together. We shook hands for that.” He also spoke about getting in touch with Preity Zinta and about it , as she praised the script, adding, “That was the first time anyone complimented the film. I owe it to her and every time I meet her I give her a special hug and thank her: “You were the first person who told me that this film is okay.” So Bobby and Preity Zinta are the couple , which I wanted, but it didn’t happen.”
Yep, we met is a romantic comedy in which a cheerful, self-absorbed girl changes the life of a depressed man on a short trip from Mumbai to Bhatinda and how his love helps her find herself again as she begins to lose faith in life lose. The film, which was released in 2007, won several awards and proved to be a career-defining film for both Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan.
