Hyundai Blames Tiny Spot for Engine Problems in 2024 Models

  • Hyundai is recalling 7,349 Elantras, 2,364 Venues and 3,798 Konas from the 2024 model year.
  • The vehicles may be equipped with a defective exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve sensor, which can cause a short circuit and cause the engine to stall.
  • The automaker will replace the EGR valve assemblies in all 13,511 vehicles at no cost to owners.

We’ve already established that making cars is very hard work, but assembling them correctly is also very fiddly and requires an incredible level of precision. Even small amounts of soldering flux leaking into the wrong place can cause the entire machine to fail, Hyundai recently learned.

The automaker is recalling 13,511 vehicles in the U.S. due to a problem with a sensor deep inside the vehicle. The electronic component controls the exhaust gas recirculation valve assembly and may have been contaminated with flux during manufacture by Hyundai’s supplier BorgWarner.

This is bad news because the soldering aid could oxidize over time, increasing the chance of an electrical short. When this happens, the exhaust gas recirculation valve malfunctions, potentially resulting in a sudden loss of power that could leave the driver stranded on the road and in danger.

Hyundai first became aware of the issue in March after customers received reports of their vehicles unexpectedly stopping. During its investigation, the automaker determined that the short circuit interrupted power to the crankshaft position sensor, causing the engine to stall.

Hyundai is aware of 14 incidents in the United States that can be attributed to this issue, but fortunately the company has received no knowledge of any accidents, injuries or fatalities as a result. The automaker reports that 7,349 Elantras, 2,364 Venues and 3,798 Konas from the 2024 model year are affected by this recall.

To remedy the situation, Hyundai will contact owners starting June 28 and ask them to return their vehicle to a nearby dealer where the exhaust gas recirculation valve assembly will be replaced free of charge.
