In the third season, which premieres in May, Colin (Luke Newton) and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) lead the series after evolving as on-screen characters. Hair and makeup designer Erika Ökvist discussed how Colin and Penelope’s transformation came to life.
“In Seasons 1 and 2 we focused on all rounds [Luke’s] The hair was quite round. His costume also had a lot of ruffles, so we didn’t see his square jaw,” Ökvist told TVLine in an interview published on Thursday, April 25.
However, Season 3 presented the opportunity to highlight Newton’s jawline with a haircut – in addition to a closet full of unbuttoned shirts. Meanwhile, Coughlan’s character was allowed to swap out her frilly dresses for something more classy.

According to Ökvist, color theory also played a big role, as Penelope wears much more sophisticated outfits compared to previous seasons. Penelope’s hair also took on a darker shade, although Coughlan, 37, wore the same wig as before.

Liam Daniel/Netflix“The reason it doesn’t look so bright but more sensual and elegant is because the yellow in the dresses she wore in Season 1 enhanced the red and orange,” Ökvist explained. “[The wardrobe for season 3 shows] What color does it and how do you have to think when you do hair and makeup?”

“Luke and I read the books at the beginning of the first season and it was fun for us. We thought, ‘Imagine if we had to kiss and do that,'” Coughlan said Entertainment tonight in June 2023. “And then Season 3 came and we were like, ‘Oh God.’ And then it’s like it’s my friend. I have to kiss my boyfriend. And you can’t pretend to kiss someone, you really have to kiss them. It’s spicy. A lot of things from the books that fans expect made their way into the series.”
Earlier this year, Coughlan praised Newton for making her feel “really cared for” on set.
“We really had each other’s backs and were also able to just laugh about it, like just lying under a blanket and saying, ‘I should relax now,'” Coughlan said AP Entertainment in February, to which Newton added: “Yeah, in the middle of the day you just relax and think, ‘I don’t actually care if I’m naked.'”
Coughlan noted at the time: “They asked, ‘Do you want to get up?’ We said, ‘No, no, I’m fine.'” I’m fine.'”
The actress has since shared the story in more detail TeenVogue on Wednesday, April 24: “So it’s really funny. This is true. It’s proof that we just reached a point where we were so comfortable with each other. We had just finished the big sex scene, the most intense and involved one, and we were just relieved.”
The first half of Bridgerton The third season premieres on Netflix on Thursday, May 16th. The remaining episodes will be released on Thursday, June 13th.
