Linking to a random third-party account when all you want to do is play a video game you paid for is really annoying and, quite frankly, it stops me from even getting certain games from certain publishers, who shall remain nameless, onto the market bring. Helldivers 2 Gamers are experiencing this frustration right now, with the PC version of the wildly popular third-person shooter.
New players must link both accounts on May 6th, but existing players have until June 4th before the requirement takes effect. Sony says forcing linking to a PSN account helps “protect gamers from grief and abuse by enabling banning of players who engage in this type of behavior.” Ah, the popular excuse “a few bad apples”.
This was always the plan, according to publisher Sony, but “technical issues” at launch led to a delay in the tie-in mandate. In other words, when the PC version came out on February 8th, you could just play it like any other game, as nature intended, but now you have to do the whole “insert credentials” rigamarole. This can be time-consuming, especially if you don’t already have a PSN account or are playing on something like a Steam Deck. Also some regions where Helldivers 2 is available on PC .
