CSK moved up to 3rd place with the win while Punjab remains at 8th place in the IPL 2024 points table.

Simarjeet Singh shines on his IPL debut in 2024

Last season, Simarjeet Singh played just six games for the Chennai Super Kings, who eventually won the 2023 Indian Premier League Cup. The tall and powerful right-armer had impressed everyone in the CSK camp and also won the hearts of fans for his ability to ‘hit the deck’ and concede very few runs.

Simarjeet Singh is not necessarily a serial wicket-taker, but he is definitely someone who is capable of stopping the flow of runs completely. That’s exactly what happened yesterday. After coming into the game as an impact replacement in place of veteran opening batsman Ajinkya Rahane, the seamer picked up where he left off last season.

Although his requirement came a little late in the bowling attack, Simarjeet Singh ensured that he made an immediate impact and completed the task given to him. In his very first pass over the spell that The Delhi-born pacer took the wicket of Punjab Kings’ wicket-keeper batsman Jitesh Sharma.

In the 4th ball of his first over of IPL 2024, Simarjeet Singh bowled a long and bouncy delivery to Jitesh Sharma, who landed a thick edge as he cut off. After sending Jitesh back for a golden duck, Simarjeet almost got another wicket.

He had bowled another shorter ball delivered by Ashutosh Sharma but found Moeen Ali at mid-wicket but the Englishman was able to drop him. However, just a few overs later, Ravindra Jadeja managed to grab Ashutosh’s wicket for just three runs.

In the second over of his reign, Simarjeet Singh scored again. After being bowled by Harshal Patel for a six and later cut off for a four, the pacer bowled another hard throw to get rid of Patel for 12 runs. The 26-year-old eventually finished the game with a score of 16/2 from 3 overs. His save rate was just 5.33 and he clearly showed that he can be very efficient.

What did Simarjeet say about Bravo and Simmons?

After the game, Simarjeet Singh praised Dwayne Bravo and Eric Simmons for being exceptional coaches and giving him the space to improve. He also credited former India coach Simmons as the mastermind of the team’s strategies.

“Eric Simmons and Dwayne Bravo are great coaches. They give you the space to move your thoughts forward. Our coach Erik is the mastermind.” – said Simarjeet after the game.

Following his appreciation from Simarjeet Singh, Eric Simmons also praised the former for a three-over spell and described it as ‘magical’. Simmons also stated that it is good for the CSK camp that the players are prepared for the opportunities that come with injuries and stressed that every player should have an attitude like Simarjeet.

“Getting the wickets that did that was magical. “So it’s important to make sure the whole team is ready because we never know when we’re going to call them up.” – Eric Simmons told media reporters.
