Google is giving its password manager a visual refresh to make the user interface look smoother and more modern.
The folks at 9to5Google have discovered a new design with a tall bar at the bottom to make it easier to switch between passwords, find weak passwords, and navigate settings. The new look follows Material Design 3 guidelines and comes via a server-side update in the latest stable version of Play Services (16/24/16).
Since Android has been around for a while, many of the changes you’re seeing now are mostly related to appearance, making sure everything follows the Material Design 3 style.
We’ve seen this in many places – from the Fitbit app’s sleep data page to Google’s new account sign-in page and various other Google apps. Now it’s time to give the password manager a new face.
First, the Passwords tab appears, which includes a pill-shaped search bar at the top and a profile switcher on the right for managing device-specific passwords. At the very front is the “Add Password” button, followed by all of your saved credentials.
Swipe next to the Review tab to see if any of your passwords are weak, reused, or exposed in a data breach. It scans them every time you check. Lastly, the Settings tab remains the same – it already had those Material Design toggles.
We also spotted the redesign on one of our devices.
Before this update, the Android password manager looked pretty similar to the website version. There was a search bar at the top and then just a long list of your passwords in alphabetical order.
Of course, your passwords are still in the Settings app powered by Google Play Services. The design does not use dynamic colors and sticks to blue as an accent color.
For those who use Android tablets in landscape mode, the password manager redesign uses a navigation bar on the side instead of the bottom bar, according to 9to5.
Material Design 3 has been out since 2021, but many company-managed apps and user interfaces still haven’t adopted it. Nevertheless, it looks as if more Google apps are finally coming on board with the password manager update.
