GM’s Secret Chevy PEV2 and PEV3 Concepts Unearthed

  • GM introduced the PEV2 and PEV3 concepts, which were designed several years ago as environmentally friendly city cars.
  • These tiny electric vehicles feature a special seating arrangement and emphasize maneuverability and space efficiency.
  • They show GM’s previous research into innovative electric vehicles designed specifically for urban needs.

GM Design has quietly launched a new “From the Vault” series, giving us a look at some never-before-seen projects. The first to be unveiled is the Urban Active Project, which is effectively a vision of a city car in the style of the Smart ForTwo and Renault Twizy.

The project started around three years ago and focused on the needs of customers living in cities such as New York, London and Shanghai. According to GM research, many drivers in these cities travel less than 40 miles per day, drive alone and never exceed 40 mph.

This led the company to develop two new concepts known as PEV2 and PEV3. Both are 2.5 meters long and can accommodate two or three people.

The Personal Electric Vehicles (PEVs) were intended as small, divisible electric vehicles. The PEV3 was notable for having a central driver’s seat and a passenger seat just behind it on either side. The PEV2, on the other hand, featured a central driver’s seat and a lounge-like passenger seat behind it.

Little else is known about the concepts, but they were intended to be Chevrolets and were developed by studios in Michigan and California. The company also pointed out that you can “park with your nose to the curb, saving valuable city parking space.”

Unlike other concepts, running prototypes were built to “demonstrate the efficiency, spacious interior and fun experience potential.” As you can see, the models feature an expansive greenhouse and minimalist interior. The PEV3 appears significantly wider than the PEV2 and GM noted that the latter is a “lean vehicle.” This suggests that the car would lean sideways similar to a motorcyclist.
