Genesis G80 EV Magma Concept debuts in China, previewing an electric performance sedan

While the V6-powered Genesis G80 Magma concept is still fresh in our minds, the Korean brand unveiled an electric version of the performance-oriented sedan at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show. The Genesis G80 EV Magma concept swaps the signature orange hue for a China-specific Acme Blue, combined with a new set of 21-inch aerodynamic alloy wheels and a carbon fiber body kit.

According to SangYup Lee, head of Genesis Global Design, the new shade shows that the Magma program is not “tied to a single color or shape.” The Acme Blue was inspired by blue flames, which are known to burn at the highest temperature range.

Another highlight of the new concept are the 21-inch alloy wheels, which not only reduce the unsprung masses, but also contribute to brake cooling thanks to their aerodynamically optimized design. The rest of the body kit is similar to the ICE-powered version, with extensive use of carbon fiber and flared fenders. However, there are some changes that indicate that this particular magma is emission-free.

The Crest grille is fully covered for better aerodynamics, and the roof has solar panels that should provide a few extra miles of range between charges. At the rear, the ducktail spoiler is more subtle than on the ICE version and the four tailpipes are missing from the diffuser with integrated F1 light. Finally, the interior combines Alcantara with quilted leather upholstery and blue-painted carbon fiber inserts.

Genesis didn’t reveal the specifications of the all-electric powertrain, but said the G80 EV Magma “outperforms the traditional internal combustion engine.” The G80 Magma’s twin-turbo V6 is said to produce around 500 horsepower, a figure that could easily be surpassed by a dual electric motor setup.

The performance-oriented sedan is equipped with an “Advanced Suspension System” that is specifically tuned for better handling. The chassis has been lowered and the tracks are wider compared to the standard G80 Electrified. Braking performance has also been improved with larger ventilated brakes.

While the Genesis G80 EV Magma was unveiled as a concept, SangYup Lee called it a “groundbreaking addition to the lineup,” hinting at a production version. We don’t know if the upcoming electric performance sedan will be limited to China or if it will reach other markets including Europe and North America. Note that the V6-powered Genesis G80 Magma is a limited production offering exclusively for the Middle East.

In addition to the concept, Genesis also unveiled an updated version of the G80 Electrified with a China-specific Vision Blue exterior color, a 130 mm (51 in) longer wheelbase and the 27-inch OLED display from the recently facelifted G80. In addition to the production vehicle GV80 Coupé, the product range also included the X Gran Berlinetta and GV60 Magma concepts.

Hyundai Group’s premium brand entered the Chinese market three years ago and plans to expand its presence with new and updated models tailored to the preferences of Chinese customers.
