Gabrielle Union And Dwyane Wade Never fail to make a statement Met Gala. On the iconic Monday night, the longtime couple strutted up the fashion event’s iconic stairs in “Shady Baby”-approved looks!
The Union dress by Michael Kors takes a unique approach to the annual theme of “Sleeping Beauty: Resurgent Fashion”: The water-inspired dress in silver and green gives the 51-year-old actress the look of a mermaid.
The “Idea of You” producer paired her dress with earrings by Paloma Picasso for Tiffany & Co. Archives, a starfish brooch by Elsa Peretti(r), a platinum bracelet with a green tourmaline and diamonds, a bracelet from Platinum with a black opal and diamonds and platinum rings and platinum rings with blue vyprians.
Speaking to ET’s Rachel Smith, Union says her dress got the only approval she needed — that of her five-year-old daughter, Kaavia James Wade.
“Mission accomplished,” she says of the toddler’s feelings. “There’s only one girl we care about how we look, and Shady Baby likes that. She was like, ‘Mom, you look like a mermaid!'”
Wade, 42, accompanied his wife in a lilac-purple suit, looking as dapper as ever. The couple explains that as familiar faces on the Met Gala carpet, they have their routine down to a science.
“We start with sketches and it takes months [there’s] “A lot of back and forth with our stylist and Michael Kors and Donatella and Dwyane and Jason Bolden – it’s a lot,” Union admits.
According to Wade, the actual preparation for the big Monday involves a lot of “wine and music.”

When When the couple attended the Met Gala last year, Kaavia shared is a much harsher critic than her 16-year-old sister, Zaya Wade.
“Kaavia is a tougher judge, but yes, both of them are okay with these outfits,” Union told ET. Still, the actress loves sharing her passion for fashion with all of her children, with Wade teasing that his wife Zaya has “begged” his older brother Zaire to attend school dances so she can see them in formal wear.
“Give me a homecoming, a prom,” she pleaded, noting that Zaya attended her winter formal in January – Wade proudly shared pictures from the night on his Instagram. “I had, like, two dances, but Zaya was like, ‘I got you. I have you.'”
With Zaya almost ready to leave home for college, Union must come to terms with her children growing up. Speaking to ET at the New York premiere of Your idea Last month, Union spoke about her recent events College visiting trips with Wade and Zaya.
“I think she’s so quiet because she knows exactly where she wants to go, but I think she’s entertaining us by seeing what our country has to offer,” Union said of her stepdaughter. “We are stressed. With her family in mind, Union is particularly selective in accepting projects. This philosophy, Union said, is also her best way to combat aging.
“If you don’t say no, you’re going to need every serum, but the power of no and boundaries will, in my opinion, save you a lot of money and plastic surgery,” she joked.
