Forget Tuk-tuks, Thailand is Getting an Electric Toyota Hilux Songthaew

  • Only limited technical details are known about the Hilux Revo BEV.
  • The truck may have the same 71.4 kWh battery as the bZ4X.
  • Toyota will test a dozen taxi versions on the streets of Pattaya.

Toyota has unveiled a new variant of its upcoming battery-electric Hilux at the Bangkok International Motor Show in the form of a pickup bus to be tested in Thailand. Given that pickup trucks account for about 50% of all new car sales in Thailand, the significance of this model’s debut in the country is obvious.

The Toyota Hilux Revo BEV prototype shown in Bangkok has been converted into something known locally as a “songthaew”. These vehicles are common in Thailand and usually take the form of pickup trucks with the loading areas converted into large seating areas. They are a popular form of shared transportation throughout much of the country and are also often used as private transportation for hotels and resorts.

The automaker will introduce 12 of these Hilux Revo BEVs to the streets of tourist hotspot Pattaya, located about 90 minutes southeast of Bangkok.

While Toyota has been very open about the Hilux Revo BEV’s development process, it has not revealed any key technical details about the truck’s electric powertrain. A handful of media outlets in Australia had the opportunity to test a prototype last year and speculated that it would have a similar 71.4kWh battery to the bZ4X. Information about the range is not yet known, but Toyota is aiming for a range of around 200 km or 124 miles.

It’s unclear which other markets could get an electric version of the Hilux, but it could launch in a variety of countries in Southeast Asia and Oceania. The market for electric pickups of this size remains small and ahead of the launch of the Hilux BEV, some reports suggest that Toyota may test the electric truck market with a hybrid rather than a fully electric version.
