However, Mattel says the film aims to entertain viewers of “all ages,” which makes sense since it’s based on a children’s toy. The Matchbox brand was founded in 1953 after car enthusiast Jack Odell decided to create a scale model that his daughter could take to school.

According to the facility’s rules, she was only allowed to play with toys that fit in a matchbox, so the model cars had to be small. Odell succeeded, and his daughter quickly became the envy of the schoolyard, founding the die-cast toy brand that is now owned by Mattel.

The toy company is on something of a film boom following the success of the Barbie film. In addition to the Matchbox film, toys-focused films such as Hot Wheels, Magic 8 Ball, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, American Girl and more are in development.
