Finally a Campaign I Can Support

I’m a big fan of public transport. Enabling services such as trains Hundreds of people have to get from A to B at once, Subway systems help hundreds of thousands of employees come to their workplace every day and Even buses have their advantages when it comes to reducing traffic jams in city centers. For this reason, I’m all for it Improving local transport systems in every possible way, even through simple changes, to put a smile on users’ faces.

That’s why I’m joining this excellent new campaign out of Boston calling on downtown managers to do just that improve public transport in the city. You might think this means adding more train services, cleaning up stations or even building the city’s subway stations Easier to access. No, what this campaign wants are googly eyes glued to the front of trains.

It’s a simple campaign, but I think it would really brighten up Boston and make it a true global player when it comes to mass transit. The campaign that was brought to us Attention from the folks at CarScoopswas launched by Massachusetts residents Arielle Lok and John Sanchez, who argue that Boston’s transit operator MBTA “has a responsibility to improve the lives of Bostonians.”

What do we want? Googly eyes! When do we want them? Now!

“If the trains can’t be reliable, at least they can be fun and put a smile on the faces of over a million people every day,” they write their campaign manifesto. “Compared to the $24 BILLION needed to repair the T, simply adding googly eyes to the trains could add up to a budget of just a few hundred dollars. Think of all the new T riders who will come from all over the world to enjoy the glory of Boston trains.”

The pair are asking the MBTA to test their proposal for a few weeks to see how it is received. They argue that this is a similar tactic to that used in Canada every year when trains in Vancouver are dressed up like Rudolph for Christmas. If that were the case takes place year-round in BostonThey say that people’s days “instantly become ten times better.”

It’s a fair argument, and one I would agree with if city officials can’t Significantly improve public transport Then sharing a late, crowded train with a group of grumpy commuters should at least be more fun in America. If they want to invest heavily in infrastructure instead, then of course I’m in favor of it too.

If you agree, you should go to the march that Lok and Sanchez are organizing in Boston next week. It begins April 29 and will have fans marching from trains and Googley eyes to the MBTA offices. I’d say I’ll be there too, but I might be stuck I’m starting my own campaign for the London Underground, but we’ll have to wait and see.
