Fernando Alonso: Aston Martin Appeals Penalty for Carlos Sainz Collision in Chinese GP Sprint

Aston Martin has submitted a request to the FIA to review the penalty imposed on Fernando Alonso for causing a collision with Carlos Sainz during the Chinese Grand Prix sprint.

Alonso was trying to keep Ferrari driver Sainz from third place in the shortened race when the two collided in an incident at Turn 9.

Sainz suffered damage and fell from the third place he had just finished to fifth, while a puncture on Alonso’s Aston Martin led to his retirement.

After investigating the incident and questioning both drivers about the event, the stewards handed Alonso a 10-second penalty – meaningless given his retirement – and three penalty points on his driving license.

The penalty points were significant considering Alonso received three points for his involvement in an incident with George Russell at the Australian Grand Prix in March, putting him halfway towards the 12-point barrier for a year now The result is a ban on a race.

The best of a dramatic sprint at the Chinese Grand Prix.

Given that the 10-second penalty had no impact on the race result, Aston Martin’s appeal appears to be motivated by a desire to reduce or eliminate penalty points.

The FIA released a document on Tuesday confirming Aston Martin’s request for a right of review. The hearing is scheduled to take place via video conference on Friday at 1 p.m.

The first part of an F1 right of review hearing requires the appeal team to provide a “substantial and relevant new element which was not available to the party seeking the review at the time of the decision in question”.

In the event that the Stewards accept that a satisfactory new element has been presented, a second part of the hearing will be convened at a date to be determined.

Ferrari teammates Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz discuss their on-track battle in the Chinese GP sprint.

Ferrari was also ordered to send a representative to Friday’s hearing. Then the teams will be in the USA this weekend for the Miami Grand Prix.

Shortly after the collision with Alonso, Sainz got into another altercation with his teammate Charles Leclerc, who was upset after he went off the track.

The stewards noticed the incident between the Ferraris during the sprint but decided not to take any action.
