After weeks of rumors and reports, it’s finally official. “For almost two decades, it has been a great honor for me to have played a key role in the development of Red Bull Racing from a rising newcomer to a multi-title winning team. I think now is the right time to pass this baton to others and seek new challenges for myself,” Newey said in a statement. “In the meantime, the final stages of RB17 development are upon us, so I will focus on that for the remainder of my time with the team.”

Red Bull plans to unveil the hypercar later this year, and it should be pretty impressive. Power comes from a hybrid powertrain based on a V10 air suspension valve that can rev up to a deafening 15,000 rpm.

Newey previously stated that the engine will produce around 1,000 hp (746 kW/1,014 hp), combined with a 200 hp (149 kW/203 hp) electric motor that provides torque when changing gears and acts as the car’s reverse gear.

With a curb weight of less than 1,984 lbs (900 kg) and aero elements capable of exerting 1.7 tons of pressure on the car, Newey claims the hypercar will be capable of lap times set by Formula 1 cars to reach.

Red Bull plans to build just 50 RB17s, each with an expected price tag of £5 million ($6.24 million at current exchange rates). The hypercar will be shown to the world for the first time this summer and track testing is scheduled for early 2025, shortly before Newey leaves the team. Production is scheduled to begin in 2026.

The designer is leaving Red Bull Racing after 19 successful years. During his time, Newey helped the team win seven F1 drivers’ titles, six constructors’ titles and 118 races.
