In a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali reflected on his career and working with actors of different generations. The conversation came amid the success of his new Netflix series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. While Sanjay acknowledged the evolution of filmmaking and acting style, he also expressed his admiration for the demands placed on actors in previous decades. He highlighted the operatic, high-pitched acting of the 80s and 90s, exemplified by films like Devdas.

Highlighting Shah Rukh Khan’s performance
SLB particularly praised the performances of Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit and Kirron Kher Devdas. He noted the technical skills and understanding required for such a theatrical style of acting and suggested that it could be challenging for modern actors.
Opposite acting styles
The 61-year-old filmmaker contrasted the operatic approach with the subtler, more restrained approach favored in contemporary Indian cinema. He emphasized that he appreciates the commitment of all the actors he has worked with over the course of his 30-year career. The acclaimed director emphasized the value of working with diverse personalities. He expressed his belief in a mutually beneficial creative process where both he and the actors contribute to the characters and the overall film.
Coming back to the show, it started streaming on the OTT giant from May 1st. The film stars Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sharmin Segal, Sanjeeda Shaikh and Richa Chadha in the lead roles. Meanwhile, Fardeen Khan, Shekhar Suman, Adhyayan Suman and Taha Shah Badussha are seen in key roles.
