Bollywood Hungama spoke to Joginder Mahajan, who was distributing Tan in North India. He told us, “We re-released it four weeks ago.”

He made it clear that the collections were not huge, but the performance was surprising. He commented: “Business is good. This is because the ticket prices in most cinema halls are around Rs. 150 or Rs. 250. If you are showing a re-released film, the prices cannot be that high. We informed the cinema owners about this, but they didn’t want to understand. Our main competitors are TV and OTT. In order to attract audiences to the cinema, lower ticket prices are crucial.”

He continued, “If ticket prices are reduced to Rs. 50 or Rs. 60, more people will come. Canteen sales will also increase. Because of this factor, earlier, average or small films also worked.”

Add that he published Tan In around 50 cinemas, Joginder Mahajan explained what motivated him to re-release this popular film: “It has been 20 years since the film released in theatres. And it hasn’t been digitized. We have digitized it. Furthermore, Salman Khan didn’t bring any film with him this Eid. So we thought about releasing this film during the festival. It was Ultra’s decision. Also, Salman films are doing well in Delhi/UP.”

Whatever went in TanThe advantage is that it is a complete masala dish. Joginder agreed, “Yes, the film has action and makes an important commentary on the politics of the country. It’s ideal for election season.”

Since the new week begins tomorrow, TanThe run continues. Joginder Mahajan said, “We will continue with the film. From tomorrow it will be played in Varanasi, Ludhiana, Bulandshahr etc. We continue to play in 5-6 centers every week.”

Ashutosh Agarwal, exhibitor and owner of Starworld Cinemas, cheered: “Tan was released in Agra, where it did reasonably good business. It didn’t do business like Vijay’s film Ghilliwhich was recently re-released.”

He continued: “The exhibitors have rented the film permanently. And they were able to recover their investment.” Asked whether cinema operators could make a profit, he explained: “When cinema operators say they have recovered, one can assume that they have even made a profit.”

Besides Salman Khan, Tan It also starred Shilpa Shetty, Amrish Puri, Arbaaz Khan and Akanksha Malhotra. The film was directed by Puneet Issar and was about an honest and brave police officer.
