Punjabi star Gippy Grewal is back Shinda Shinda No Papa. The hilarious Punjabi caper is slated to release on May 10 and has created huge excitement. Bollywood Hungama spoke exclusively to Gippy about the film and much more.
EXCLUSIVE: Gippy Grewal Talks Shinda Shinda No Papa; says comedy in Hindi films is becoming repetitive; explains why we don’t make enough kid-friendly films: “The huge success of Pathaan and Jawan has created an action trend. The trend will continue until 8-10 action films stop flopping.”
The trailer of Shinda Shinda No Papa It’s hilarious. What feedback have you received? And how do you find out about the reactions?
To be honest, I don’t really know anything about the reaction. But there are certain people in the industry who express honest views. Then there are relatives and family members who immediately tell me:This thing doesn’t look good. or ‘“It sounds like that”. Then the cinema owners will correctly assess the enthusiasm and know whether people are excited about our film or not. That’s how we come up with the idea. Before the trailer, we released the teaser, which received great response.
In our favor, it turns out that social comedies don’t happen often. Even in Hindi, right aisi Koi Movie Noone came. I think parents realized they could take their kids to see this film. The children would enjoy the film and learn something good from it. That’s also the big problem Children- Movie Hello nahin aati hai. There are also a lot of children in the film. I remember there were 100 to 200 children during the shoot as they play an important role in the film. Plus, they were so fun to work with!
Why don’t we make films for children? Hollywood filmmakers have now become masters of the genre…
I think filmmakers often follow trends. The super success of Pathan And Jawan gave rise to the action trend. The trend will continue until 8-10 action films stop flopping. Instead of doing what we want to do, we start imitating others.
Your son, Shinda Grewal, plays your son in the film. What was it like filming with him for the first time?
Yes, as actors we are working together for the first time, although he had a small role in it Go ahead, Jatta 3 (2023). I had sent him in Ardaas Karaan (2019). I knew how did that happen can be done (smiles)! After that he had a bigger role in Honsla Rakh (2021). During filming Shinda Shinda No PapaThe whole family used to come to witness our work. So we had a lot of fun making it.
Their characters share a unique connection in the film. Do you have a similar equation in real life?
(Laughs) No, no, we’re definitely not like that in real life! I remember a scene where I had to scold him aggressively and he cried. My wife happened to be on set. She started crying and asked me, “Why are you talking so angrily to our children??’! I explained to her that it was part of the scene. My son also told her the same thing. Shinda Shinda No Papa is about a child who grew up abroad and is surprised at how things work in India. This aspect must be understandable for many people and will benefit the film…
Absolutely. Their lives are so different there that they can’t believe it when we tell them how we grew up. A great film like Shinda Shinda No Papa comes out in the middle of the Lok Sabha elections. Meanwhile, Bollywood filmmakers are staying away from theaters citing choice as the reason. Do you think this reason is justified?
I don’t think the Lok Sabha elections can affect a film’s business. Voting is your right. But it’s not like you can’t watch a movie if you have to vote!
Your film 2023, Go ahead, Jatta 3, is the biggest Punjabi purchase ever. This year too, apart from your films Warning 2 And Jatt Nuu Chudail Takri, none of the films worked in Punjabi cinema. Does that put pressure?
Yes, Touchwood, my films worked during that time. Shinda Shinda No PapaThe enthusiasm also seems strong. Let’s see how it works. Of course we would hope it breaks the record Go ahead, Jatta 3. We are sure it will work. How well it works remains to be seen.
The humor in Punjabi films is quite strong. But you hardly see any comedies in Hindi these days and most of them don’t work as intended. Where do we lack humor?
Firstly, Punjabi in my way humor Which pack is more? Just like South cinema has powerful action, humor is our forte. We also work a lot on the material. Like when we were working on it Go ahead, Jatta 3 or even other films we would discuss,’Eat scene my dialog came Rakhenge; physical comedy Are there any tickets?Then as a team we would figure out how to get the physical comedy right. Shinda Shinda No Papa is a film for children. The strokes are such that even those under 18 can understand and enjoy them. This is how the scene was created, which can also be seen in the trailer, in which the child is asked about the capital of a country. This is something that everyone will understand. But we often alienate children or ladies with humor.
I have also observed that comedy repeats itself in Hindi films. We put a lot of effort into it – regardless of whether the comedy should be situational or pointed – and then we work hard at it. I think lack of effort is also a reason for not-so-great comic Hindi films.
Last year, Aamir Khan was the chief guest at the trailer launch of Go ahead, Jatta 3. He expressed interest in making a Punjabi film. Was there an update on this?
(Laughs) No, we don’t have a script to tell him. As soon as we find the right topic, we will contact him.
You showed Shinda Shinda No Papais trailer for him?
Not yet. I messaged him a few days ago when I saw his episode in The Great Indian Kapil Show. I didn’t even inform him that I had come to Mumbai as the transportation was quite hectic.
You promote your Punjabi films in Mumbai and that is very rare. What brings you here? Are you trying to expand your base?
Not exactly. I come here to work and when I’m free I meet some friends. Like I could drop in on Aamir Bhai or Kapil Bhai.
How do you manage to do so much work and promote extensively at the same time?
It is not difficult as I shoot for a month and promote the film for two weeks. So even if I make 4 films, that’s 6 months worth of work. You still have 6 months left in the year. Also, it doesn’t matter if you have 3, 4 or even 5 releases a year as long as the genres are different. Warning 2 was a hardcore action film in which I had no dialogue. Jatt Nuu Chudail Takri was a horror comedy Shinda Shinda No Papa is a social comedy. My next film, Ardaas Sarbat De Bhalla Diwill be a social flick in which I will be in a different avatar.
