You found an interesting title for your film. Usually we hear that the title is not available as per the filmmaker’s choice. In the case of Tipppsywhat was the scene like?
The title was available. It has always been with me. In 2003 I had registered a title, Oops. Nobody even knew what “oops” meant. At the time I was the only one who thought of the title. Likewise with Tipppsy, no one even cared. At one point I even forgot to extend the title. There was a phase when I was wondering when this film would be made and when I would shoot it. I received the letter from the Indian Motion Pictures’ Producers’ Association (IMMPA) and didn’t bother to respond to it. Then when I went to the club office to apply for the extension, I asked if it was still available. The lady replied, “Deepak ji, you are very happy (laughs). nobody has that title The There wasn’t even a thought in my mind. Take it yourself’!

Not only did you direct it, you also wrote the screenplay. It is often difficult to write a suspense thriller; Often the writing gets confused in the second or third act. What steps did you take to get the second half right?
I have always been an avid watcher of thrillers. I love the genre. From my filmography, that of Abbas-Mustan Khiladi (1992) is one of my favorite films. I learned from them how to write and execute the script. I also saw a lot of Hollywood, French and Spanish cinema. When I decided to do a crime novel, I had to think a lot. It’s not a one-night job. It took me a few weeks to crack the script. Two of my friends, editor Ballu Saluja and my associate producer and good friend Ramesh Sharma, were my stepping stones. I would tell them: ‘That’s the story. What do you think, What can I do? Murderer Who can be?’. They made a few guesses and I made sure those characters didn’t turn out to be murderers (laughs)! So it’s really important to have some stepping stones. Ultimately, writing was a wonderful experience Tipppsy and doing it was another incredible experience.

The casting process was challenging for you. I believe that not all of these girls were the original choice…
Before COVID, Esha Gupta and Daisy Shah were part of the film. We even did a commercial song with them. You’ll even see their insights in the film. Unfortunately, everything went haywire after COVID. Esha also went to Madrid and almost settled in there. In fact, I met her by chance just two days ago. We hugged and she said, “Sir, aapne bana li woh film” (laughs)! I assured her: ‘You’re still in song. Do not worry!’

I also had problems filming in London. In 2020 I couldn’t go there due to the first lockdown. Then, at the end of 2021, Omicron canceled our plans. I said to producer Raju Chadha, “Mujhe London.” There was no society at all. There is chaos in the horoscope.. I asked him if it would be okay if we shot the film in Mumbai and Goa. He was all for it. He said, “Deepak ji, your story is good. Tickets are here shoot’.

Then we started looking for girls who would fit in with the actors we had previously hired. That’s how I found Natasha Suri and Sonia Birje; They were just awesome.

I was lucky to have these actresses who absolutely represented my characters. The girls look great, but if you watch the film you will recognize certain characters in them. Kainaat Arora plays a Haryanvi. She probably didn’t think she would play something like that. She wasn’t afraid to hire a diction coach without informing me. Also, it was an afterthought that she should be a Haryanvi. This is because my life partner Mandeep Kaur Sandhu is also a Haryanvi. Suvidha Mall had already written the dialogues and with the help of Mandeep, I changed them into Haryanvi. Mandeep also acts in the film; She is the policewoman.

So Kainaat gave it his all. During the workshop the other girls said: “Hey, what are you doing?‘! Then Nazia Hussain’s character is a tomboy. It’s a powerful piece. Alankrita Sahai, on the other hand, is very sweet; Alankrita is not like that at all in real life. So I was surprised by all the girls and their performance.

How did you come on board as an actor?
I had approached several actors, but many had scheduling problems. Murli Sharma is a very good friend. But he’s a very busy man in the South. Still, he agreed. But when he tried to look at the data, he realized that wasn’t possible. Then I turned to Dev Gill about how he would have been a great police officer. I even signed him. I started shooting. Then Alankrita met with an accident when she jumped from a height into the swimming pool with Sonia Birje. Due to the injury, the doctor strictly recommended that she stay away from lights and cameras for three days. I called Dev’s secretary and asked him if we could reschedule his appointments a bit. He told me that this was not possible at all because he had obligations in the south. Since I had no other choice, I decided to take the opportunity to become an actor and donned the police uniform (laughs)! I would consider it a blessing that I got the chance to be on screen again in a beautiful and powerful role.

Directors often claim that it used to be easier to have access to actors. However, nowadays one has to approach their agencies and secretaries, which makes the entire process cumbersome. Have you had similar experiences?
Luckily, I think God was kind. I’ve been an actor before. Actors like Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan have agencies. But since I have worked with these experienced actors, I don’t have to go through these agencies if I want to have access to them. Whenever we meet, we have great respect and love for each other. For example, I came across Shah Rukh Khan a while back; We still hug and meet like before. Aamir also encounter love.

But if I had to go for the newer actors like Ranveer Singh or Ranbir Kapoor, I would definitely have to go through the chain. I don’t really blame the actors for this as there are so many fake producers and fake financiers running around the city. It’s difficult to know who is right and who is wrong. Therefore a filter is necessary. Time has changed. There are some people who claim that they will finance our film. They meet the actor, click pictures and then they disappear! They use the image to claim:Look, the main thing is Deepak Tijori with who Movie earn money hoon’. This has even happened to someone like me who doesn’t work that often. Imagine what it must be like for Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh. Therefore, it is fair if they have a team to handle things for them.
