Alwyn was credited as a songwriter on several of Swift’s tracks over the course of their relationship. He wrote under the pseudonym William Bowery, which Swift herself confirmed in her November 2020 documentary: Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions.

“There has been a lot of discussion about William Bowery and his identity because he is not a real person,” Swift said at the time. “So William Bowery is Joe, as we know.”

Alwyn received a Grammy in 2021 after Swift took home the award for Album of the Year folklore. In her acceptance speech, Swift praised her then-boyfriend.

“Joe is the first person I play every single song I write to, and I had the best time writing songs with you in quarantine,” she said during the 63rd annual Grammy Awards.

Two years later, Alwyn shared that he couldn’t imagine writing more songs with Swift in the future.

“That’s not my plan, no,” the actor told Elle magazine in April 2022 when asked if he was interested in continuing to write songs with his then-girlfriend. (Alwyn continued to write with Swift, however, as he is credited with “Sweet Nothing” from her 2022 album midnight.)

A year later, Swift and Alwyn split after six years of dating. While Swift and Alwyn have moved on from their romance and partnership, Alwyn is still getting paid for his contributions. Several media outlets reported that the actor will earn “a five-figure amount every year” due to his involvement in the songs.

“It was completely impromptu, an accident,” he said at the time. “[Taylor] said, “Can we try to sit down and get to the end together?” And we did. It was as simple as some people making sourdough.”

In addition to writing “Betty,” Alwyn is also credited as co-producer of the title. He admitted that the song came about thanks to Swift’s encouragement.

“I probably had something to drink and was just stumbling around the house,” Alwyn remembers. “We couldn’t decide on a movie that night and she asked, ‘Would you like to try and finish that song you sang earlier?’ So we got a guitar and did that.”
