Erik ten Hag admitted Manchester United have been “put under pressure” by Crystal Palace but believes he is still the right manager to take the club forward.
Michael Olise scored twice on Monday night along with goals from Tyrick Mitchell and Jean-Philippe Mateta to take United’s season to a new level and leave them eighth in the Premier League with a goal difference of minus three.
United have conceded 81 goals in all competitions this season, the most in a single season since 1976/77, with the makeshift defense at Selhurst Park broken as Casemiro was exposed as a centre-back.
Olise had too much space in midfield for Palace’s first goal, which came from a throw-in, with Ten Hag revealing the players had failed to follow his instructions.
“It’s a goal that shouldn’t happen because we give really clear instructions on how to defend it,” he said Sky Sports. “They didn’t put it on the pitch. We were crushed.”
“There was a problem but also on the left there were two players doubling a player. This is very poor defense.”
Casemiro missed his tackle on Olise in the build-up to the opening game, despite Ten Hag insisting the team was to blame.
“You can’t say that [down to] a player. “It’s a team effort,” he said. “The throw-in when the first goal is conceded, that shouldn’t happen.”
“This is the team because we don’t follow the rules, we don’t adapt to a slightly different situation, we don’t organize ourselves, we don’t keep control in this situation. Five players over the ball and they have a throw-in, that’s not possible.” .
“It is clear, it is obvious, this is a below-average performance. We didn’t act the way we wanted and it’s not good enough. We are very disappointed. Our fans were behind us and we should have kept fighting like the fans did.”
“There are always reasons, everyone sees our defense – we have huge problems. At the end of the day we have to deal with it and we should have done better.”
Ten Hag was confident of remaining at the club beyond the summer despite uncertainty over his position as INEOS makes sweeping changes to the football structure – and he appeared unmoved after this latest defeat.
“Absolutely,” he said when asked Sky Sports whether he was the right person for the job. “If the right players are available, we have a good squad. We lack almost the entire defense and then we have problems.”
“I will keep fighting. I prepared the team as best as I could. It wasn’t good enough, I have to take responsibility for that, but I’ll bring the energy and get them ready for the game on Sunday.”
Carragher: Man Utd are one of the most poorly coached teams in PL
Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher on Monday Night Football:
“This is one of the worst-coached teams in the Premier League. That’s a fact. That’s not an opinion. That’s a fact. The numbers show that when you look at them at the bottom of the league defensively, they are worse than Sheffield United.” .
“I struggled to imagine how United would win tonight but I thought Palace would win by one or two nil. No Manchester United team should be beaten 4-0 by Crystal Palace.”
“If Manchester United’s U23 team has gone through their academy, trained and been taught how to play, I still wouldn’t expect them to lose 4-0.”
“I have never been a manager or a coach, but I have been a player and been coached by top coaches and some of the things I see are just wrong.”
