Electric Lotus is Coming to Porsche Cayman in 2027, Priced from $95,000

  • Lotus is expected to offer rear- and all-wheel drive versions of the Type 135.
  • The basis of the vehicle will be the company’s new Lightweight Electric Vehicle Architecture.
  • The top version will reportedly come with two electric motors and produce 872 horsepower.

Lotus’ new battery-electric sports car could cost around $95,000 when it launches, making it slightly cheaper than the current Emira V6, the brand’s last combustion-powered sports car.

Lotus is expected to launch its new battery-electric sports car in 2025. The new model, currently known as the Type 135, will serve as a rival to the electric twins Porsche Cayman and Boxster. So what do buyers get for their money?

The Type 135 was originally intended to be developed together with Alpine, but the two companies parted ways on the project. The basis of the sports car will be the brand’s new Lightweight Electric Vehicle Architecture (LEVA), which is highly configurable and can be used across multiple cars. On the Type 135, Lotus will mount the battery pack directly behind the cabin in the same place an engine is mounted in a mid-engine car.

While most electric vehicles have batteries in the floor, by placing them behind the cabin, Lotus can optimize the driving position and allow occupants to sit as low as possible in the cockpit. Car magazine claims that entry-level models will have a 66 kWh battery, while other versions will have a 99 kWh battery.

At least two different performance configurations are also expected. The series will be based on a single-engine version with rear-wheel drive and 462 hp. If you’re looking for more power, you should be able to opt for a pair of engines with 872 hp and all-wheel drive.

“It’s our goal: a pure two-seater that has to live and breathe the brand,” Lotus Chief Commercial Officer Mike Johnston said recently. “Someone who owns an Elise or an Esprit should be able to get into the Lotus Type 135 and immediately feel at home.”
