Cupra Formentor and Leon Get a “shark Nose” and More Power

The Cupra Formentor and Cupra Leon have always made a bold statement on the road and have now been given a facelift for the first time. In addition to the expected styling updates, there are also numerous changes taking place under the skin.

Cupra’s designers have completely redesigned the front fascia of both models, adopting the “shark nose” front end that we saw on the Terramar SUV. The updated models feature a new Cupra badge, redesigned LED headlights with a triangular matrix and a wide-open grille. Additionally, changes have been made to the rear design of both vehicles, which now features revised taillights and an illuminated Cupra logo.

Both models are underpinned by VW Group’s MQB Evo platform, and while that architecture remains unchanged, the flagship 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in the most powerful models has now been upgraded. This engine now produces an impressive 328 hp and is only offered for the Formentor and Leon Sportstourer and not for the sedan.

Models equipped with this engine also received a trick torque splitter, Akebono brakes and a special “Cupra” drive mode that optimizes throttle and transmission response. The 2.0-liter is sold exclusively with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive.

Buyers who don’t need something that can compete with a stock VW Golf R have plenty of other powertrains to choose from. For example, there is a mild hybrid 1.5-liter turbo with a 48-volt starter generator and two 1.5-liter plug-in hybrids with 19.7 kWh batteries and 201 and 268 hp, respectively. These PHEVs also offer an electric range of more than 100 km. A simpler 2.0-liter engine with 201 horsepower and all-wheel drive is also available.

Redesigned interior

Several changes were made to the cabins of the Leon and Formentor. This includes a redesigned center console, new materials and bucket seats covered in 73% recycled microfiber or eco-conscious leather. Cupra has also revised the digital instrument cluster and installed a larger 12.9-inch infotainment display. The pair also gets a 12-speaker audio system from Sennheiser.
