A smooth ride, spacious interior seating, luxurious textures and intelligent feature placement make the Kia Sportage an intriguing package. KBB Review Highlights

In its fourth generation of production, the 2021 Kia Sportage is the hallmark that launched a segment in 1995. With accessible seating for four (five if you squeeze into the second row) and more versatility than a sedan, buyers initially flocked to the Sportage as a comfortable and budget-conscious SUV option. Sportage buyers have moved away from its budget roots and now enjoy these features, two engine options and an excellent warranty package in one hassle-free package.

The Kia Sportage excels in the style and comfort categories in a crowded class that includes the Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V. Inspired by the sharp lines and smooth surfaces of fighter jets, the new Sportage bears the fingerprints of designer Peter Schreyer, who formerly worked at Audi. An elevated cab looks bright and clean, with logical seating and operator positioning and modern room configuration. Practical cargo spaces, an improved seat design and an optional panoramic sunroof complete the overall package. Our editors liked that Kia retained the use of traditional buttons to access everyday functions like climate control, fan speed and audio controls.

All trim levels except the SX Turbo feature a moderately efficient 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission and standard front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is an option on all trim levels. Drivers will enjoy the three button-controlled driving modes (Normal, Sport and Eco) as well as standard forward collision mitigation with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning.

Passengers will appreciate the attention to detail throughout the vehicle, even in the most basic trim. The LX features an 8-inch touchscreen, 60/40-split folding rear seats, a 6-speaker sound system and a comprehensive driver assistance package. Upgrade to the S trim and access the luxurious blacked-out Nightfall package. It’s dressed to impress with special badging, larger tires, piano black accents, wireless charging, an additional USB port, leather-trimmed seats, and keyless entry with push-button start. If you want heated front seats and power driver seats, you’ll need to upgrade to the EX trim. If you crave speed, lean into the SX Turbo trim with a turbocharged engine, sport suspension, Harman Kardon audio, LED headlights/taillights and race-inspired leather interior.
