Could This Be China’s New Mazda6 EV?

  • Changan Mazda will show a new electrified sedan at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show.
  • The teasers show a mid-size sedan with an aerodynamic silhouette and full-length LED taillights.
  • The new model will be based on a Changan-sourced architecture that is compatible with all-electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Mazda’s Chinese joint venture with Changan has announced a new electric sedan on social media, sharing a glimpse of its silhouette and details such as its taillights ahead of its debut at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show. The mid-range model is considered a potential successor to the discontinued Mazda6 (Atenza) and is likely to remain limited to the Chinese market.

The Japanese carmaker has also confirmed that there will be both a fully electric and a plug-in hybrid variant based on a platform developed by Changan.

The teasers provide a glimpse of the sedan’s aerodynamic profile and distinct character line, which are reminiscent of designs from other Changan-owned brands. Additionally, we can see the full-width taillights hidden beneath what looks like a rear spoiler. If this is a rebadge, Mazda will likely incorporate its signature grille flanked by two aggressively styled headlights.

Changan Mazda has already announced two debuts for 2024, internally codenamed J90A (fully electric) and J90A-REEV (range extender plug-in hybrid). The J90K and J90K-REEV will follow in 2025, further expanding the local offering. Mazda has trademarked the EZ-6 and EZ-60 nameplates in China, with the former a strong contender for its upcoming electric sedan and the latter likely reserved for an electric SUV.

Chinese media reports that the new Mazda will be based on Changan’s EPA1 architecture, which already forms the basis of the Deepal/Shenlan SL03 sedan and the closely related S7 SUV. The platform is compatible with fully electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains, the latter using a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine as a range extender.

In Europe, the automaker recently trademarked the Mazda 6e moniker, fueling rumors of a new generation of the midsize sedan. It is unclear whether this model will be related to the Changan-based sedan or whether it will be a separate offering tailored to Western markets.

Changan Mazda did not give a specific date for the debut of the new sedan, only stating that it is “coming soon.” However, during the 2024 Changan Automobile Global Partner Conference last January, chairman Zhu Huarong confirmed that the electric vehicle will be unveiled at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show, which opens on April 25.

Changan Mazda’s current model range in China consists of the Mazda3, CX-30, CX-50 and CX-5 models. This means the new addition to the range will be the only sedan with a three-box design and an optional all-electric powertrain.
