Chery Scrambles to Repair Omoda 5 After Rear Axle Breaks in Malaysia

  • The Chinese carmaker has traced the problem to a supplier of the rear axle assembly.
  • 600 Chery Omoda 5 models are being recalled across Malaysia and 10% could experience a similar lower control arm failure.
  • It is unclear whether the recall affects Omoda 5s sold outside Malaysia.

Imagine you’re driving down the road in a new crossover and suddenly one of the rear trailing arms breaks. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened for the owner of a Chery Omoda 5 in Malaysia in a worrying incident at the end of April.

var adpushup = window.adpushup = window.adpushup || {que:[]}; adpushup.que.push(function() { if (adpushup.config.platform !== “DESKTOP”){ adpushup.triggerAd(“4d84e4c9-9937-4f84-82c0-c94544ee6f2a”); } else{ adpushup.triggerAd(” 6a782b01-facb-45f3-a88f-ddf1b1f97657″); } });

Photos shared on social media and quickly gaining widespread traction across Malaysia show that the rear trailing arm of a gray and red Omoda 5 broke off in the middle of the road, leaving the owner stranded and the car undriveable.

The owner of the Omoda 5 contacted Chery and was told that the automaker would investigate the issue and resolve it for them. Although it took several days for them to come forward and offer a solution, Malaysia’s Road Transport Ministry immediately recalled 600 Omoda 5s in the country.

When investigating the cause of the problem, Chery discovered that a worn tip on an automatic welding machine at the rear axle assembly supplier had been replaced with a new tip, but the equipment had not been recalibrated. This means that the rear trailing arm may not have been welded tightly. While Chery is recalling all Omoda 5s produced in Malaysia between August 14 and 17, 2023, it is believed that only around 60 units may be affected by the issue.

The carmaker has contacted local owners and informed them of the recall. Owners can also visit the Chery product updates page and enter their VIN number to see if there are any current safety recalls for their cars. It is unclear whether Omoda 5 models sold outside Malaysia also have brittle rear trailing arms and whether they will be subject to recall.
