Chery and Jaecoo Are Introducing Three New Plug-in Hybrid SUVs

cherry and be Jack The sub-brand has unveiled a trio of new plug-in hybrid SUVs (PHEVs), two of which are planned for Australia.

The Chery Tiggo 9 Pro PHEV was unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show today, joining the brand’s lineup above the existing Tiggo 7 Pro and the upcoming Tiggo 8 Pro Max, which is set to compete with models such as the Toyota Kluger and Kia Sorento.

A Chery Australia spokesperson said CarExpert The Tiggo 9 Pro is being considered for a local launch, but no further details have been revealed about a possible launch.

The Tiggo 9 Pro is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which alone produces 175 kW of power and 385 Nm of torque.

The petrol engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission as well as a three-speed 3DHT electric motor that can produce up to 165 kW – although Chery has not revealed the combined system outputs.

Although Chery doesn’t provide any information on battery size, it claims that the Tiggo 9 Pro’s fuel consumption of 5.2L/100km on the milder WLTC test cycle means it can travel more than 1400km without needing to refuel or charge.

Externally, the Tiggo 9 Pro is similar to the Tiggo 8 Pro Max, but features 20-inch alloy wheels and a sealed main grille for better aerodynamic performance.

Inside the cabin, Chery says there’s a 15.6-inch infotainment screen with 2.5K resolution, an “integrated multifunction console” and 3D stitched seats, but we haven’t seen any photos of the interior yet.

Shortly after unveiling the Tiggo 9 Pro, Chery’s Jaecoo sub-brand introduced two more PHEV SUVs: the J7 and the larger J8.

The petrol-only version of the Jaecoo J7 has already been confirmed for a launch in Australia later this year, but the PHEV variant is still being considered for the local market.

It is powered by a “hybrid-specific” 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine, with the transmission-mounted electric motor bringing its total output up to 255kW of power and 525Nm of torque.

Compared to the standard J7, the PHEV features more aerodynamically efficient 19-inch wheels, enabling an all-electric range of up to 89 km and a combined range of almost 1,200 km with a full fuel tank and battery.

Jaecoo’s larger J8 PHEV – which we don’t have any pictures of at the moment – is powered by the same petrol engine, but also by two electric motors on the front and rear axles respectively, producing a whopping 445kW and 915Nm.

The brand is expected to launch in Australia from the second half of 2024, with features and pricing for the J7 to be announced closer to its launch.
