Chelsea secured an 8-0 victory over Bristol City to secure the title in Emma Hayes’ final home game as manager.
Hayes had already conceded the WSL title after her side’s stuttering 4-3 defeat to Liverpool in midweek, but that came before Man City were beaten by Arsenal on Sunday, offering a glimmer of new hope.
The Blues’ main concern was to overcome their goal difference deficit and they went about their work in typically tireless style, scoring within six minutes when Guro Reiten converted from the penalty spot.
Sjoeke Nusken added a narrow second goal, while Aggie Beever-Jones added a third just after the break, beating Fran Bentley with a sweeping shot from a brave through ball from Erin Cuthbert.
Chelsea were relentless and Bristol City were powerless to stop the attack. In the 56th minute, Reiten shot her second arrow of the evening before substitute Catarina Macario played a magnificent back pass to the Norwegian striker, completing a sensational hat-trick.
Niamh Charles managed six. Riding made it to seven. Then it became eight with a header from Beever-Jones. The defeat was over and now Chelsea’s chances of winning a fifth consecutive WSL title have increased again. “The game is starting,” Hayes shouted to her assistants on the sideline.
The game actually continues.
