Carnie Wilson Learned How to Avoid Giving up Sugar on a New Show

Carnie Wilson lost 40 pounds by cutting sugar and gluten from her diet.

It’s by no means an easy lifestyle change, and Wilson, 55, admits there are still times when she’s tempted.

“I feel like I’ve learned to deal with it,” she said exclusively Us weekly while we talk about her new cooking show, Sounds delicious with Carnie Wilson. “Honestly. Sometimes when I want to taste a cake I’m baking, I bite into it, chew it and spit it out. I don’t swallow it. I know that sounds really disgusting and weird.”

Carnie, the daughter of the Beach Boys co-founder Brian WilsonShe also doesn’t think this unorthodox way of satisfying her appetite will leave her sidelined. She compared it to giving up drinking.

“For me it’s a bit like alcohol,” she said. “I won’t take a sip. I just don’t drink. Right now I don’t eat sugar or gluten my whole life and feel better physically when I do. So that’s what I do with it.”

Carnie added that the transition was a difficult adjustment, calling it “really fucking hard and even more so in the beginning.” But now it’s just a given. I just feel a lot better.”

There’s no doubt that chewing cake and then spitting it out without actually enjoying the sugar-filled treat takes discipline. It helps to have some healthier options that are also delicious.

“I used gluten-free flour and it tasted great. I wanted to eat it,” she said. “There is a way to do this. And some people can avoid sugar and gluten in moderation. I can’t. I realized that. And that’s okay. I eat a lot of guacamole and chips. I eat corn tortillas. I have rice and potatoes. I am happy.”

Carnie’s new lifestyle may have resulted in dramatic weight loss, but that wasn’t her primary goal.

“I just felt disgusting,” she said. “Just severe stomach pain and feeling bloated and yucky and just completely inflamed.” And I woke up and said, ‘Ow, ow.’ Everything hurts.'”

Her doctors said she had prediabetes and she was thinking about her two daughters, Lola, 18, and Luci, 14.

“I thought my girls deserved to have me and I deserved to feel better,” she said.
