Cardi B spoke out after drawing some criticism for a comment she made at the Met Gala on Monday, May 6. The 31-year-old “WAP” rapper posted a video responding to backlash when she said her fashion designer was “Asian.” Instead of saying the designer’s name on Instagram. The clip of Cardi defending herself has since been shared on X (formerly Twitter).

For the fashion event, Cardi wore a stunning long black dress designed by a Chinese designer Sensen Lii. When asked who her designer was FashionCardi did not mention the designer’s name. “I feel great,” she said. It’s this amazing designer. They’re Asian and stuff.” Cardi mentioned Sensen’s brand Windowsen in her Instagram post.

Responding to the backlash, Cardi accused her critics of blowing things out of proportion before explaining why she left out her designer’s name. “I see a lot of you on Twitter pretending to choke,” she wrote Entertainment tonight. “I want to make this very clear.”

The “I Like It” rapper explained that a big part of the reason she couldn’t remember her designer’s name was due to her nervousness and her original plan of the red carpet not going as smoothly as it did she had imagined it. “When I was on the red carpet, I was very scared because the dress was supposed to be on a small podium and I practiced how to pose on the podium, but on the carpet I wasn’t allowed to use the podium. So I had a lot of things on my mind and I was pushed to the front of the line,” she said.

Cardi continued, saying that she simply said “Asian” because she wasn’t sure what nationality they were. “I find it offensive if I said, ‘Oh, some Chinese designer’ or ‘some Korean designer’ or ‘some Vietnamese designer,'” she said. “I don’t want anyone’s nationality to be confused.”

Ultimately, however, Cardi didn’t seem too worried about the backlash and whether or not she would be invited back. “Baby, I’m Cardi B,” she said.
