Canada’s World Energy GH2 has received environmental approval from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for Project Nujio’qonik, a fully integrated, commercial wind-to-green hydrogen project.

Canadian provincial environment and climate change minister Bernard Davis announced that the project had met the requirements of the province’s Environmental Assessment Act and was approved to proceed subject to a number of conditions and the issuance of the necessary permits, World Energy said in a statement Press release.

The Nujio’qonik project will be Canada’s first commercial producer of green hydrogen/ammonia, generated from over three gigawatts (GW) of renewable electricity generated by wind projects on the west coast of the island portion of Newfoundland and Labrador, according to the project description on the company’s website. The sites will be developed simultaneously with a staggered target delivery schedule, with hydrogen production expected to increase over time.

World Energy noted that a three GW wind farm will provide about 250,000 tons of hydrogen per year using 1.5 GW electrolyzers.

“The Nujio’qonik project continues to be one of the most advanced green hydrogen export projects being developed in the world,” said Sean Leet, Managing Director and CEO of World Energy. “We appreciate the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s approach in conducting its due diligence over the past 22 months and recognize the continued hard work required of them [the] We will all work hard for the future of this new industry.”

“To support the advancement of our project and ensure Newfoundland and Labrador capitalizes on the opportunity, we have made significant investments in the environmental process. We are committed to advancing our project responsibly and building a world-class development that will benefit our province, its residents and our country and contribute to the global fight against climate change,” Leet added.

“Industry at home and abroad has been closely monitoring this decision,” said John Risley, chairman of the World Energy Agency. “Following a thorough, highly regulated environmental review process, this decision demonstrates the province’s commitment to climate action.”

“Newfoundland and Labrador has taken the necessary steps to solidify its position as a global leader in renewable green energy production,” Risley continued. “The Province recognizes and understands the competitive pressures created by the green hydrogen subsidies embedded in the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act and the rapidly growing global demand for green fuels. They are doing the right thing for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and Canadians. The Nujio’qonik project is a catalyst for the green energy industry in Atlantic Canada and around the world.”

“Our next steps are to update our plans as necessary to meet the specific conditions set forth by the province and to complete the initial approvals necessary to begin initial construction,” Leet added. “In parallel with our early work activities, we will continue to advance FEED [front-end engineering design] We will advance our activities, confirm orders for additional long lead time items, and advance and execute offtake agreements as we work toward a final investment decision in early 2025.”

According to the release, civil engineering firm SK ecoplant is the investor and engineering, procurement and construction partner for the project. Kyung-il Park, President and CEO of SK ecoplany, said: “We are committed to creating new and meaningful opportunities by leveraging Newfoundland and Labrador’s rich natural resources while minimizing the environmental impact on the province and local communities. “We will continue to work closely with various community stakeholders to ensure the project is developed in a responsible and sustainable manner.”
