Cadillac Lyriq Costs Almost $30,000 More in Germany Than in the USA

  • Cadillac will sell the Lyriq in Germany exclusively as a two-engine model.
  • The electric vehicle was launched in other select European markets, including Switzerland, France and Sweden.
  • Lyriqs destined for Germany are not equipped with GM’s Super Cruise system.

In the USA, the Cadillac Lyriq is available from 58,590 US dollars, but in Germany, where the electric vehicle has just come onto the market, customers have to pay almost 30,000 US dollars more.

Cadillac has been preparing the Lyriq for select European markets since last year and has just launched it in Germany. Price starts at €80,500, just over $86,500 at current exchange rates. However, it’s not a direct comparison with the US, as Cadillac only sells the all-wheel-drive Lyriq in Germany, not the cheaper rear-wheel-drive version that US customers can opt for. It’s also only available in Luxury and Sport trim levels, meaning there’s no equivalent to the base Tech version sold in the US. For a more direct comparison, the cheapest all-wheel drive Lyriq in the US is the Luxury model, starting at $66,190.

Interested German buyers can test drive the Lyriq at locations in Berlin and Munich. Test drives will also be possible in Cologne from June. Cadillac also plans to open retail locations in Frankfurt and Hamburg in the second half of the year.

Entering the German market will not be easy. VW, Mercedes, Audi and BMW are the four top-selling automakers in Germany year after year, and Cadillac needs to convince buyers to switch from a premium local brand to an American brand with very little presence on the continent.

All Cadillac Lyriq models sold in Germany have a 102 kWh battery pack that powers two electric motors with 528 hp and 450 lb-ft (610 Nm) of torque. The luxury SUV accelerates to 100 km/h in a claimed 5.3 seconds, supports 190 kW charging and is said to have a WLTP range of around 530 km (329 miles).

GM’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system is not included in the German model, but some driver assistance features remain, including lane departure warning and automatic emergency braking. Cadillac also says it has experimented with suspension tuning, steering feel and brakes to better suit European customers’ tastes.

Cadillac launched the Lyriq in Europe last year through a direct sales model in Switzerland. It is also sold in Sweden, France and other unspecified European markets.
