Business 51 project moves forward amid ongoing concern from residents

Traffic moves along Church Street in Stevens Point on Oct. 7. About 200 people gathered Oct. 6 at Stevens Point Area Senior High to discuss the controversial Business 51 project that would bring major changes to a 3-mile stretch of Church and Division streets. Topics ranged from pedestrian safety to traffic volumes to the public’s desire for the road to remain four lanes.

STEVENS POINT – After nearly 200 people gathered at Stevens Point Area Senior High Thursday to voice their thoughts on the controversial Business 51 project, the city’s engineering company will move forward with its next steps in the planning process.

Although many in attendance were hoping to see major changes to those redevelopment plans

, only minor changes to business access along the 3-mile stretch of Division and Church streets have been made so far.

The city has proposed spending about $48.5 million on rebuilding Business 51, which would include property acquisitions, adding bike lanes, a roundabout and reducing travel lanes from two in each direction to one while adding a middle left-turn lane in some portions of the road.

The Stevens Point Common Council in September 2021 approved preliminary design plans for the project from AECOM for the north, central and south segments. Following Thursday’s meeting, they will complete their 30% design plans before returning them to the city for approval.
