Britney Spears‘ Conservatorship case involving estranged father Jamie Spears is officially over, Us weekly can confirm.

“It has been an honor and privilege to represent, protect and defend Britney Spears. Ms. Spears remains an icon and a brilliant and courageous artist of historic and epic proportions,” Spears’ attorney said Mathew Rosengart said in a statement Us on Friday, April 26th. “Although the conservatorship ended in November 2021, her wish for freedom has now truly been fulfilled.”

The lawyer said that with the agreement, Britney, 42, will no longer have to “go to court or be involved in or become involved in any legal proceedings.”

“Britney Spears won when the court suspended her father, and Britney Spears won when her constitutional rights and civil liberties were restored,” the statement said.

Britney Spears and her father, Jamie Spears, have been at odds throughout the singer’s life. Growing up, Britney and her mother, Lynne Spears, were close as the matriarch took her eldest daughter to auditions and performances in her native Louisiana. Jamie, for his part, was struggling with a number of personal issues. After Britney’s career took off […]

Britney’s conservatorship ended in November 2021 after her estate had been under her father’s control for 13 years. In 2008, Britney suffered a series of public confrontations following her divorce from her ex-husband Kevin Federline. Jamie, 71, was later appointed her conservator and was responsible for her finances and life. (Britney and Federline, 46, share sons Sean, 18, and Jayden, 17.)

“Good God I love my fans so much it’s crazy!!!” 🥺❤️,” Britney wrote via Instagram in November 2021, celebrating her newfound freedom. “I think I’m going to cry for the rest of the day!!!! The most wonderful day ever… Praise the Lord… Can I get an Amen???? #FreedBritney”

In her 2023 memoir The woman in meBritney spoke about how trapped she felt after being controlled by her father for a decade.

“I became a robot. But not just a robot – a kind of children’s robot. I had been so infantilized that I lost parts of what made me feel like myself,” she wrote. “The conservatory stripped me of my femininity and turned me into a child. I became more of a unit on stage than a person. I had always felt music in my bones and blood; They stole that from me.”

Britney shared that she felt betrayed by her family as no one fought for her during the difficult time in her life.

Britney Spears’ career and personal life have seen a number of ups and downs over the years. Spears first demonstrated her vocal prowess in 1992 at the age of 10 on the Star Search singing competition. After a stint in the Mickey Mouse Club, she signed a record deal with Jive Records in 1997 […]

“I think back now about my father and his associates having control over my body and my money for so long and it makes me sick,” she wrote. “Think about how many male artists have gambled away all their money; How many had substance abuse or mental health problems? No one tried to take away their control over their bodies and their money. I didn’t deserve what my family did to me.”

Jamie, on the other hand, didn’t see the conservatories that way. In December 2022, he defended his decision to place his daughter under his protection for a long period of time.

“Not everyone will agree with me. It was a hell of a time,” he told the Daily Mail by the time. “But I love my daughter with all my heart and soul. Where would Britney be now without this conservatorship? And I don’t know if she would still be alive. I don’t. … To protect them and protect them too [her two teenage sons]Conservatory was a great tool.”
