“Mother, do you believe that friendship is the best foundation for love?” Colin asks his mother, Lady Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell), who replies, “It’s rare, but you have to follow your heart.”
The trailer also informs viewers about last season’s couple, Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate (Simone Ashley) after they found their happy ending. Season 3 of the successful Netflix series is based on the novel by Julia Quinn Romance with Mr. Bridgerton. Fans had the opportunity to see Colin and Penelope’s connection grow over the final two seasons before they took center stage.
Ahead of the Regency show’s return, Coughlan, 37, told how she and Newton, 31, developed Colin and Penelope’s on-screen chemistry.
“Luke and I read the books at the beginning of the first season and it was fun for us. We thought, ‘Imagine if we had to kiss and do that,'” she recalled Entertainment tonight in June 2023. “And then Season 3 came and we were like, ‘Oh God.’ And then it’s like it’s my friend. I have to kiss my boyfriend. And you can’t pretend to kiss someone, you really have to kiss them. It’s spicy. A lot of things from the books that fans expect made their way into the series.”
Coughlan later joked that she wanted a “PG version” for her family. “If you want to see it with your mother and father, then do it, [but] “Having seen parts of it,” she joked on Australia’s Today FM in February. “But even in the first season, I missed out on a lot with my mother. She was like, “That episode was short,” and I was like, “It was a short one.” It was a short one. Yes.'”
Newton, meanwhile, said having Coughlan as a friend in real life made his job easier.
“I feel like the question is always asked, ‘Is it easier to do the intimate scenes or the more romantic scenes with someone you’ve been friends with for four years or someone you’ve just met for a day?’ I can safely say it’s easier with a friend,” he said Entertainment tonight earlier this year. “There really is that kind of support.”
The first half of Bridgerton The third season premieres on Netflix on Thursday, May 16th. The remaining episodes will be released on Thursday, June 13th.
