Bluesky Will Be Adding DMs and Videos Soon

The decentralized social media platform Bluesky has already had some major successes. It’s a rare example of a Twitter/X competitor finding success. Most of the other competitors, aside from the meta-powered threads, have now gone out of business. In addition, Bluesky was able to collect more than 3 million registrations during a period when users could only join the platform by invitation. Since opening to all, Bluesky has amassed more than 5.6 million users.

And Bluesky was able to do all of this without two key features found on most major social media platforms: direct messages (DMs) and video uploads. But it won’t stay that way for long.

You have returned to Threads. Here’s how it can keep you.

The Bluesky team reported in a post published on Tuesday divided Upcoming plans for the platform include direct messaging and videos.

DMs, videos and more are in the pipeline

According to Bluesky, the team plans to add a number of new features in the coming months.

DMs or private messages appear first on Bluesky’s to-do list. As Bluesky points out, all posts on the platform have so far been public. That will soon change as the team works on “a DM service that will be integrated into the Bluesky app.” Bluesky says the first version of the DM feature will allow users to limit who they can receive messages from. Users can only allow DMs from users they follow, disable DMs completely, or have open DMs, meaning anyone can send them private messages on the platform.

Destructible speed of light

Probably the most noticeable feature gap with Bluesky is the lack of video uploads. That too will change soon. Bluesky says that once released, this feature will allow users to upload video clips up to 90 seconds long.

While these are the biggest on Bluesky’s list, there are more features on the way. Bluesky says it is working on its own OAuth, or “Sign In With,” feature. Once this is set up, third-party websites and platforms can allow users to log in with their Bluesky accounts.

In addition, Bluesky also wants to further expand the unique features of its platform. Bluesky has one of the more robust anti-harassment features and wants to improve these moderation tools.

Another unique Bluesky feature, Custom Feeds, which allows users to fully customize their timeline, is set to receive a number of new updates. Bluesky says there will be the ability to send specific posts to feeds and curate submissions, requests to the algorithm to “show more” or “show less” of a particular content type, and the ability to “control superfeeds.” that show what’s happening in the communities of your following feeds.

All in all, it looks like there will be a lot of new things coming to Bluesky. During a week when Twitter was founded Jack Dorsey With the company leaving its board of directors, these new features will certainly be a welcome addition to the Bluesky community.
