Hill died peacefully on Sunday morning at the age of 79, surrounded by his fiancée Alison and his son Gabriel. Hill was born in Manchester, England in 1944 and his career blossomed on the stage. He became known for his portrayal of unemployed worker Yosser Hughes in the acclaimed BBC miniseries Blackstuff guys (1982). His powerful performance, characterized by the unforgettable catchphrase “gizza a job” (Give me a job), was well received by the audience.
Hill’s transition to the big screen proved equally successful. In 1982 he shared the screen with the legendary Ben Kingsley in Richard Attenborough’s historical drama Gandhi, in which he played Sergeant Putnam. This versatility continued throughout his career, with Hill moving seamlessly between historical figures, powerful leaders and complex characters.
In 1997, James Cameron became Titanic took the world by storm. Hill’s portrayal of Captain Edward Smith, the stoic but ultimately tragic commander of the ill-fated ocean liner, brought depth and humanity to the historical figure. His performance highlighted the burden of responsibility that Captain Smith bore and the devastating consequences of the disaster.
Bernard Hill’s career reached an even greater height with Peter Jackson’s monumental adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s novel Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Hill played the role of King Theoden of Rohan and delivered a nuanced performance. We see King Theoden as a tired ruler who was initially manipulated by the dark forces of Saruman. But with unwavering strength and courage, he overcomes the influence and leads his people into the epic Battle of Helm’s Deep, a pivotal moment in the trilogy. Hill’s powerful portrayal of Theoden’s transformation resonated with fans around the world and cemented his status as a legend of the fantasy genre.
Following his success in these blockbusters, Hill continued to grace the screen with notable performances in projects such as Gorky Park (1983) and the BBC miniseries Wolf Hall (2015).
