After a world tour and recognition at more than 40 film festivals, director Gaurav Madan made his directorial debut Cancer from cancer is scheduled to release in theaters across India on May 24. This is one of the rare Indian films shot on 16mm film and set in the heart of Varanasi, offering a unique, immersive perspective through the lens of the only living death photographer in the ancient city.

Gaurav recalled meeting a real-life death photographer during a trip to Varanasi and found “immense cinematic potential” in the subject. The film is praised by critics at festivals as an atmospheric, visually powerful and nuanced portrayal of “traditionality in conflict with modernity”.
The film had its world/Indian premiere at the IFFK in Kerala and its international premiere at the Shanghai International Film Festival. It has won top awards at various film festivals including FIPRESCI India (Grand Prix, Best Film), Pune International Film Festival (Best Director) and Diorama IFF (Best Indian Feature Film). The film has a strong star cast including Gyanendra Tripathi (TVF’s Half CA), Geetika Vidya Ohlyan (Netflix’s Soni) and Harish Khanna (Vidhu Vinod Chopras). 12. “I come from a small town called Jagadhri in Haryana. My parents had to give up our ancestral home because the government decided to widen the adjacent highway. Writer and producer Sunny Lahiri said the film’s journey from filming to its festival premiere and its theatrical release was “challenging yet magical”. “It was a herculean task to balance credibility and passion for storytelling, whether filming on celluloid or on location amid the rising tensions of cremation fires, smoke and mourners, while navigating an imaginative production “Proud of the film and excited to finally release it in theaters,” noted Sunny.
Cancer from cancer was written by Gaurav Madan and Sunny Lahiri. It is produced and presented by Jignesh Patel’s Amdavaad Pictures, a renowned production house based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The film will be released theatrically across India on May 24 by Shiladitya Boras Platoon Distribution.
