Baojun Yep Plus ESUV Launched in China: to Compete with Maruti Jimny EV

Chinese automobile giant SAIC-GM-Wuling has launched the all-new Baojun Yep Plus in China. This latest addition to their electric range is based on Yep’s three-door EV SUV. Most likely, it could be launched in India too. Most likely, it will compete with the Maruti Suzuki Jimny electric SUV, which is also reportedly under development.

Baojun Yep Plus

The Baojun Yep Plus is the larger five-door variant of the Yep eSUV. Like the smaller SUV, it features a rugged, boxy silhouette that’s both eye-catching and functional. It now looks eerily similar to the Land Rover Defender luxury SUV.

On the front there are four LED light points at each end. The middle section gets a high-gloss black radiator grille. It also gets a sturdy looking front bumper with gray elements. On the side profile it gets chunky body cladding and square wheel arches.

It also features a similarly unique body-colored panel between the C and D pillars (it looks very similar to the Defender’s storage boxes). The Yep Plus is 3,996 mm long, 1,760 mm wide and 1,726 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,560 mm.

Baojun Yep Plus interior

The Baojun Yep Plus also looks very similar to the Yep eSUV from the inside. It gets a spacious and well-equipped cabin. The company has ensured a plush-looking two-tone color scheme and high-quality materials.

The interior of the Yep Plus eSUV will feature soft-touch plastics and contrasting white stitching. Features include a 10.1-inch center infotainment screen and an 8.8-inch instrument display.

There will be a total of 28 storage spaces in the SUV. It has a generous trunk volume of 385 liters. According to the company, it can be expanded to a whopping 1,715 liters with the rear seats folded down.

Power and performance

The Yep Plus is powered by a 75 kW (100 hp) electric motor. It generates a maximum torque of 180 Nm and directs the power directly to the front wheels. There will also be four driving modes: Economy+, Economy, Standard and Sport.

The battery is a 41.9 kWh battery from Guoxuan High-Tech. According to the company, the Yep Plus has an impressive range of 401 kilometers on a single charge according to the CLTC cycle. The eSUV will also offer fast charging capabilities, allowing drivers to charge from 30% to 80% in just 35 minutes.

Baojun Yep Plus prices

The all-new Baojun Yep Plus electric SUV has been launched in China with a starting price of CNY 93,800 (Rs 10.83 lakh). The price will rise to CNY 103,800 (approximately Rs 12 lakh).

Is it coming to India?

Back in February this year, MG Motor India Managing Director Rajeev Chaba confirmed that a new electric vehicle would be joining the MG fleet. For those who may not know, MG is partially owned by SAIC-GM-Wuling. Based on these speculations, it is believed that MG will launch the Baojun Yep Plus-based SUV in India.

Will compete with Jimny EV

There are reports suggesting that Maruti Suzuki is working on developing the Jimny EV. This would mean that once launched in India, it could compete with the Yep Plus-based MG SUV. It is currently unknown when the Jimny EV will be launched in India.

According to reports, it is believed that the Jimny EV could be offered with an electric motor and a 60 kWh battery from the eVX EV SUV that will be launched next year.
