Available This Week: BNCAP Rating of Maruti Baleno, Brezza and Grand Vitara

After Tata Motors, Indian car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki has also sent its vehicles for safety assessment as part of the Bharat NCAP test. According to reports from Autocar Professional, the Indian manufacturer has sent the Baleno, Brezza and Grand Vitara models for testing and all three models are expected to have achieved high ratings. The test results for these Maruti models are expected to be released on May 8, 2024.

This is not the first time Maruti cars have been tested for safety. Global NCAP tested several Maruti models, most of which received poor reviews. The Bharat NCAP crash test evaluates cars according to Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197. The crash tests evaluate vehicle performance and assign ratings from 0 to 5 stars for adult occupants (AOP) and child occupants (COP).

According to the report, Maruti Baleno, Grand Vitara and Brezza were delivered to government agencies as early as January 2023. These models also passed the ARAI and Central Road Transport Institute testing procedures in March 2024. Government authorities have advised manufacturers not to wait until the code of conduct ends on June 4 and instead proceed with releasing crash test results.

Maruti is India’s largest automobile manufacturer and currently offers 17 models. Of these 17 models, Maruti has sent only 3 for testing. The Maruti Brezza was previously tested by Global NCAP and received a 4-star rating. Other Maruti models like the Alto and K10 received only 2 stars for adult safety and zero for child safety.

Regarding the Bharat NCAP crash test, the test protocol is in line with international NCAP rating agencies. The crash test includes a front impact test (offset deformable barrier), a side impact test and a pole impact test (only for vehicles receiving a 3, 4 or 5 star rating). The test speed is 64 km/h, similar to Global NCAP.

In addition to the crash tests, the rating system also takes into account safety functions such as the Electronic Stability Program (ESP), pedestrian protection measures for all vehicles and functions such as the front seat belt warning. The future cars in India are expected to be safer with the new rating system.

The vehicle’s structural rigidity and safety features are factors that many customers consider when purchasing a new car recently. This is probably why Maruti decided to send some of its models for testing. Indian car manufacturers like Mahindra and Tata are known for their build quality.

The Bharat NCAP was launched in August last year and since then Tata has become the only manufacturer to have sent its cars for testing. Tata Harrier and Safari, both SUVs, were sent for testing after the manufacturer introduced the facelift. These SUVs passed the test with 5-star ratings. Unlike other Tata models, the Harrier and Safari have never been tested by Global NCAP. Along with the Maruti Baleno, Brezza and Grand Vitara, safety test results for the Tata Punch ICE are expected to be released on the same day.

At some point, all automobile manufacturers in India will switch from Global NCAP to Bharat NCAP. David Ward, President, Global NCAP, had mentioned that Global NCAP’s ‘Safer Car for India’ campaign will come to an end as the company does not want to be perceived as a rival to BNCAP.
