Anne Hathaway is “grateful” for so many things in her life these days, including being sober for five years and her starring role in the Prime Video series Your idea.
Speaking to ET’s Rachel Smith, the 41-year-old actress opened up about her recent events at the premiere of her new film in New York City on Monday New York Times interviewin which she talked about going half a decade without drinking after previously announcing her sobriety during a performance The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2019.
“I’m really grateful that I was able to just make the move that I needed to,” Hathaway says of the film’s film debut Book adaptation by Robinne Lee.
In her youngest NOW Interview, The Princess Diaries alum was asked how she will celebrate her 40th birthday in 2022 and what this “milestone” means to her. In response, she said that she found many other great moments in life that were worth remembering.
“I don’t normally talk about it, but I’ve been sober for over five years,” she told the publication. “This feels like a milestone for me. 40 feels like a gift. The fact is, I hesitate to call things ‘middle-aged’ just because I can be a semantic stickler and get hit by a car later today. We.” I don’t know if that’s middle age. We don’t know anything.
This “gift” of reaching 40 came with many nuggets of knowledge and wisdom, but also with more interesting roles like that of her character Solène in Your idea. In the film, Solène – a 40-year-old single mother – falls in love with 24-year-old boy band sensation Hayes Campbell, played by Nicholas Galitzine.
Hathaway says that, much like her character, she recognized age as a gift that keeps on giving. She tells ET that she knows herself better today than she did about two decades ago, which she appreciates.
“I definitely feel a lot more comfortable in my own skin in my 40s than I did in my 20s. I felt lost in my 20s,” she says. “I felt this pressure to figure everything out and thought that somehow I was doing something wrong because I didn’t know everything about myself.”
She adds, “But it turns out that’s what your life is for.”
So what’s the priority in Hathaway’s life now? The actress says her family – especially her husband Adam Shulman and their two young sons – will always be her most important commitment.
“When I first started, when I became a mother for the first time, people were like, ‘Oh, how are you going to balance this?’ and I’m just like, ‘Balance? What are you talking about?’” she recalls. “First of all, as much as I love my career, as much as I love what I do, and you know I’m a beast at it, there’s no competition.”
Hathaway says that as a woman of a certain age, she was beyond intrigued when she first read the script for the film, which she also stars in Veep alum Reid ScottElla Rubin and Bridesmaids Co-author Annie Mumolo. She calls the film a “coming of age” for her 40-year-old character and tells ET that she’s “grateful” for the opportunity to bring a complex character like Solène to life.
“I was really excited to be a part of it,” Hathaway says.
