Imtiaz Ali’s latest film, Amar Singh Chamkila, a biopic on the legendary and controversial Punjabi singer, has received positive reviews. In a recent interview, the director recounted a nerve-wracking experience during the film’s screening – he was sitting next to Chamkila’s first wife, Gurmail Kaur. Imtiaz was worried about her reaction to the portrayal of Chamkila, who is known for his powerful music that deals with social issues but also generates controversy due to its themes.
“Amar Singh Chamkila has done many things that can be judged,” says Imtiaz Ali; recalls that he was afraid of Chamkila’s first wife’s reaction to the lead actor Diljit Dosanjh
These concerns arose from the film’s inclusion of sensitive and potentially disturbing scenes. Speaking on Zoom, Imtiaz recalled, “Chamkila’s family was at the screening. His first wife Gurmail Kaur was there. Amarjot and Chamkila’s son Jaiman Chamkila was there. Chamkila’s daughters were also there. When we saw the film, his first wife was sitting right next to me and I thought there were some sensitive scenes in the film. Should I just retreat or go back before she attacks me?”
He further added, “But when the screening was over, she hugged me and everyone was so happy with the way Chamkila was portrayed because we were hoping they would like it.” The director also thanked the family for their trust in his creative vision. “I didn’t sugarcoat Chamkila because that was the point of the film. He did a lot of things that can be judged, but I left it that way in the film and it’s thanks to the family that they understood. They knew it was factual and did not stop me in any way,” he concluded.
Amar Singh Chamkila dominated the Punjabi music scene from 1979 to 1988. Tragically, Chamkila and Amarjot were murdered in 1988. Talking about the film, Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra play the lead roles.
