Alfie Hewett is “desperate” to End the Long Wait for the Wimbledon Wheelchair Crown

Alfie Hewett has won a combined 27 Grand Slam singles and doubles titles in his illustrious career but is still searching for his first solo triumph at Wimbledon. He plans to change that this summer.

The British wheelchair tennis star has reached the singles final in each of the last two years and most recently finished second behind Japan’s Tokito Oda in 2023 after beating Shingo Kunieda the previous summer.

He has now won five doubles titles at the All England Club alongside Gordon Reid, with his partner having already won the first Wimbledon crown in wheelchair singles in 2016.

Alfie Hewett says winning the Australian Open was his highlight of 2023 in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports

“I love it, it comes around this time every year and everyone reminds me of what I don’t have,” Hewett joked in an interview with him Sky Sports. “Maybe I need to ask Gordon for some tips!

“Of course, it is an award that I crave so much and that I want to add to my collection. I feel like I’ve progressed on grass over the last few years, I don’t think it was my natural surface that I played well on when I was younger, but I’m enjoying the experiences we’ve had have, and I learn a lot.

“We haven’t played much grass tennis, the singles tournament was only introduced in 2016 and we are starting to have more tournaments on grass.”

Experience on the grass for wheelchair competition has increased and preparations for Wimbledon include Eastbourne, the British Open in Roehampton and a possible exhibition at Queen’s.

“These are all great examples of how far the sport has come so far,” Hewett added.

“It also gives us more options on the pitch and hopefully we can use that to our advantage and do some good.”

Hewett and Reid return as reigning Wimbledon champions after last year’s 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory over Japan’s Oda and Takuya Miki.

The pair started the year perfectly and won the Australian Open for the fifth time in a row.

Pedro Cachin asked Rafael Nadal for his jersey after being beaten by him at the Madrid Open

“I think I made a joke last year at the trophy ceremony after the doubles that at my first Wimbledon match in 2012 there were about three people watching, one of them was my mother and one was my sister,” Reid laughed.

“It’s come a long way since then!

“As Alfie said, we had a fantastic Wimbledon final on Court One last year, with around 10,000 spectators and a fantastic atmosphere.”

“The sport progresses every year at Wimbledon.”
