Adrian Otaegui Secures a Spot in the PGA Championship with Victory at the Volvo China Open on the DP World Tour

Adrian Otaegui delivered a brilliant final round of 65 to win the weather-shortened Volvo China Open by one shot.

The Spaniard began the day five shots behind the in-form Sebastian Soderberg, who had led the 54-hole tournament from the start after Saturday’s third round was canceled due to thunder and lightning in the Shenzhen area.

The victory gives Otaegui the fifth DP World Tour title of his career and secures him a spot in this month’s PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club after he finished in the top three of the Asian Swing Rankings with Soderberg and Keita Nakajima.

“I’m very, very happy – I’m extremely happy,” Otaegui said after the win. “I had to wait a bit since I finished to see what happened in the last group, but luckily everything went well and I’m extremely happy.”

“I started five shots behind and tried not to look at the leaderboard, not to think about the result, but to play the way I played on Thursday and Friday and think if things go well, I can I have some birdie chances on this course.” .

“I putted well, felt more and more confident with the putter as the week went on and knew if I had birdie chances I could potentially hole a few. I think I actually felt calmer as the round went on.”

Soderberg began the day with a three-shot lead but was caught by Otaegui after he made seven flawless birdies, setting the clubhouse target at 18 under par.

The Swede had the same score on his last shot but hit his tee shot into the penalty area and although he reached the par-4 hole in three holes, he failed to hole the monster par putt that would have extended the tournament.

Soderberg three-putted for a double bogey and a level-par 72 to finish tied for third place alongside England’s Paul Waring and Switzerland’s Joel Girrbach. Guido Migliozzi was in second place at 17 under thanks to a long birdie on the final hole.
