According to IDC, Apple is Losing Its Place as the Top Phone Maker to Samsung as IPhone Shipments Decline

Apple’s smartphone shipments fell about 10 percent in the first quarter of 2024, hurt by increasing competition from Android smartphone makers gunning for the top spot, data from research firm IDC showed on Sunday.

Global smartphone shipments rose 7.8 percent to 289.4 million units in January-March, with Samsung Electronics taking the top spot among Apple’s phone makers with a 20.8 percent market share.

The iPhone maker’s sharp decline in sales comes on the back of strong performance in the December quarter, when the company overtook Samsung as the world’s top phone maker. With a market share of 17.3 percent, it is back in second place as Chinese brands like Huawei gain market share.

Xiaomi, one of China’s leading smartphone makers, ranked third in the first quarter with a market share of 14.1 percent.

South Korean company Samsung, which launched its latest flagship smartphone range – the Galaxy S24 series – earlier this year, shipped more than 60 million phones during the period.

Global sales of Galaxy S24 smartphones rose 8 percent compared to last year’s Galaxy S23 series in the first three weeks of availability, data provider Counterpoint previously said.

According to IDC, Apple shipped 50.1 million iPhones in the first quarter, compared to 55.4 million units in the same period last year.

Apple’s smartphone shipments in China fell 2.1 percent year-on-year in the final quarter of 2023.

The decline underscores the challenges the U.S. company faces in its third-largest market as some Chinese companies and government agencies restrict their employees’ use of Apple devices, a move that parallels the U.S. government’s restrictions on Chinese apps for security reasons corresponds.

The Cupertino, California-based company will hold its global developer conference in June, where it will highlight software updates for iPhones, iPads and other Apple devices.
