According to Bethesda, Fallout Attracts Nearly 5 Million Players in One Day

According to Bethesda Game Studios, the Fallout gaming franchise had nearly five million active players across all titles in a single day.

Fallout 76, the online multiplayer take on the irradiated landscape of Appalachia, has posted fantastic stats following the series’ resurgence with one million active players. This is in addition to the surge in measurable attention generated elsewhere by the critically acclaimed airing of the TV show Fallout on Amazon Prime, as well as the recent announcement that a second season is in the works.

Bethesda posted its success on X on Tuesday, adding: “…and almost five million across all Fallout games in a single day!⚡”

How Fallout reached a player count milestone

The Fallout game series dates back to Fallout published by Interplay in 1997, when MS-DOS systems, Windows and macOSX became catalysts for future editions.

The franchise has come a long way since then, and the latest iterations of the dialogue-driven narrative explorer have become synonymous with consoles.

Bethesda’s Fallout 3 and Fallout 4, as well as Obsidian Entertainment’s Fallout: New Vegas, are particularly ingrained in the minds of console gamers due to their great story events, memorable side quests, and unforgettable characters. Despite their age, these titles enjoy a large player base, in part due to the large modding culture they support. The TV show has helped these single-player narrative games revive their already long life.

In the multiplayer space, Fallout 76 reaching this milestone and attracting these players is no small task for a game that was considered a raging dumpster fire for nearly six years upon its release. Early reviews of the mechanics, the cost of private servers, and the lack of challenging content dismayed players at the time.

Fallout 76 gets a second chance and doesn’t waste it

In recent months, however, the game has returned to the shape one would expect from a studio like Bethesda. Story-driven narratives and the light terraformation of the Appalachian map kept players returning and enjoying the slight nods to Fallout games of the past. This new player base explores the wasteland to gain more context about what the show is all about.

So it’s no wonder that more and more players are emerging from the Fallout 76 vaults and daily downloads of older parts are increasing. Fallout fever has taken hold and Bethesda couldn’t be happier.

This is seen as a boon for the gaming studio, whose last deep RPG, Starfield, flattered deception. It will be released exclusively for Xbox in September and will be ported to the PlayStation 5 later in 2024.

We recently broke down the best mods for gamers who’ve been wandering the wasteland and looking for more after watching the TV carnage fueled by Walton Goggins.
