India is a country full of idiots and these idiots are responsible for a number of accidents on the roads. Recently, a video emerged showing an autorickshaw driver almost overturning a truck on a road in Karnataka. Thanks to the truck driver’s attention and skill, there was no rollover on the busy road.
What did the autorickshaw driver do?
The heartbreaking video of this truck driver avoiding a complete rollover was shared by Prateek Singh on YouTube. It begins with a seemingly normal single-lane road in Vijayapura, Karnataka. We note that there was normal traffic on the road with numerous cars, scooters and other vehicles passing by.
A little further into the video we can see that a driver of a small truck was driving on the left side of the road. From behind we can see a truck approaching this autorickshaw. Just as the truck driver was about to overtake the autorickshaw, the auto driver braked.
What happened next?
The truck driver was surprised by the autorickshaw suddenly braking and had to abruptly swerve to the right in order to overtake. However, this was too abrupt for the fully loaded truck, causing its rear end to initially tip to the right and then, as the truck driver compensated, to tip almost uncontrollably to the left. Blame for laziness.
We can observe that the truck could have tipped over at any time and collided with a bus on the opposite side. However, with a bit of luck and amazing driving skills, the truck driver managed to turn left and get back on the right lane. But unfortunately this time too there was a lot of inertia in the truck, so that it was about to tip over on its left side. This time the rear of the truck had even more trouble keeping up with the front.
Despite this nerve-racking sequence, the truck driver managed to control the truck in time. This whole scary incident was captured by the rear dashcam of a car that was driving in front of the truck and the car.
Additionally, the alert driver with the dashcam noticed that the truck was about to lose control and managed to safely pull over to the side of the road. The car driver did this to avoid being hit by the uncontrolled truck.
Who was to blame?
In this particular and extremely dangerous situation, the fault lies with both the autorickshaw driver and the truck driver. The rickshaw driver paid no attention to what was happening behind him and braked without noticing the fast approaching truck. But then again, he stayed in his lane on the far left and not in the middle of the road.
The truck driver, on the other hand, should have approached the overtaking process more carefully. We all know that autorickshaw drivers often cannot see behind them and have a reputation for suddenly braking and turning. The truck driver could have avoided the entire incident by honking from behind to get the motorist’s attention and then safely overtaking.
The video shows how defensive driving can save us from many situations. Here, neither the car driver nor the truck driver did it – both felt safe doing things their own way, without expecting anything to go wrong. And that’s something you just can’t do on Indian roads.
