The country’s largest automobile manufacturer Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to launch the fourth generation Swift in India. The new hatchback will be unveiled on May 9th. Previously, numerous new details were leaked on the Internet. It was recently reported that the Swift will offer an impressive 15 percent increase in fuel economy. The Swift has always been focused on fuel economy, and the new generation model is no different.

According to the recently leaked brochure of the 2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift, it has been reported that the new Swift will offer a fuel economy of 25.72 kmph. This is a significantly impressive improvement over the current model’s 22.38 kmpl. There is an overall increase of 3.34 kmpl (nearly 15%) and it will help the brand attract more buyers.

Swift and its history of high fuel consumption

The Maruti Suzuki Swift has always been considered one of the best all-round hatchbacks in the country. However, the main reason people love this car is its high fuel economy. Historically, the hatchback has always had very high mileage models.

One of the best-selling models in its lineup was the second-generation diesel-engined Swift. It was powered by a 1.3-liter DDiS diesel engine that produced around 74 hp and 190 Nm of torque. What was particularly impressive about this model was its mileage of 28 km/h.

However, after the brand’s diesel engines were discontinued, the Swift was only available with a gasoline engine. Currently, the Swift is powered by the proven K-Series 1.2-litre petrol four-cylinder engine. It produces 89.8 hp of power and 113 Nm of torque.

However, this engine is now replaced by the all-new Z-Series 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. According to reports, this new engine will drop 8.2 HP of power and 1 Nm of torque. However, it will achieve an impressive ARAI certified mileage of 3.34 kmph.

The mileage of 25.72 km/h stated above applies to the 5-speed manual transmission. However, the mileage for the automatic transmission variant has not been disclosed. Additionally, it remains to be seen whether the company will offer the new Swift with a 5-speed AMT or a more conventional torque converter.

However, reports have revealed that the difference between the mileage of the automatic transmission variants will be around 3.16 kmph. This lower fuel consumption is also due to the 12V mild hybrid system that the Swift comes to India with.

In other Maruti Suzuki Swift news, Japan’s NCAP recently tested the new Swift for safety. And in good news, it was reported to have received an impressive four-star rating. That’s much better than the one-star rating the Swift has received in the past.

However, it remains to be seen whether the India-spec 2024 Swift will also get a 4-star rating when tested by B-NCAP (Bharat NCAP). What is noteworthy is that even Global NCAP (GNCAP) has not crash tested the all-new Swift yet.

Strong hybrid future!

Like most Maruti Suzuki cars under 10 lakh rupees The Swift is expected to receive a strong hybrid drive in the future. Suzuki of Japan, the parent company of Maruti Suzuki, is set to develop an affordable, powerful hybrid powertrain for use in the automaker’s budget car range. While a timeline for the introduction of the new powerful hybrid powertrain has not been announced yet, it is likely to happen before the next wave of emissions norms come into effect in the Indian market.

Currently, India is in the second phase of Bharat Stage 6 (Real-Time Driving Emissions or RDE). While the Indian government is yet to announce the launch date of the new Bharat Stage 7 (BS7) emission norms, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has asked the automobile industry to prepare for the toughest emission norms ever. Once the BS7 norms come into effect, almost every automobile manufacturer will be left with no option but to rely on hybridization to reduce exhaust emissions.

Maruti Suzuki, as an industry leader, is expected to lead this change. The first powerful hybrid is expected to be launched in India in 2027. The all-new Maruti Suzuki Swift is expected to be one of the first cars to feature the newly developed low-cost powerful hybrid technology.
