Main Hoon Na (2004) starring Shah Rukh Khan, Sushmita Sen, Zayed Khan and Amrita Rao turned 20 on April 30. Directed by Farah Khan, the cast of the film was spot on. As expected, Shah Rukh Khan aced the lead role perfectly. Zayed was great as the goofy and lovable Lucky. Sushmita Sen stole the show and Amrita Rao became a household name with this flick. Suniel Shetty, on the other hand, looked stunning and delivered a top notch performance as the antagonist Raghavan. Farah Khan shared hilarious anecdotes about finding an actor to play the villain in this popular film on Rajeev Masand’s audio show ‘Picture Ke Peeche’.
20 years of Main Hoon Na: “Shah Rukh told me, ‘Kamal Haasan would do the film blindly. He owes me a favor. I suffered during the shooting of Hey Ram. I was made to sing Tamil and Telugu songs” – Farah Khan
Farah Khan said, “I went to Kamal Haasan first. Shah Rukh told me, “He will do the film blindly.” He owes me a favor. I worked in Hello Ram (2000) suffered for him and me during filming. I was made to sing Tamil and Telugu songs!”
Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned. Farah revealed, “So I went to Chennai. He was very nice to me. He fed me lunch and even showed me the segments of the film he was filming. Nobody talked about my film (laughs)! Then he said, “I can’t make your film.” I told him, “But you haven’t even heard the story.” He replied, “I’m making a film about the Silk Road.” I remember that very well, because I wanted to find out what the Silk Road was!”
Farah Khan continued, “Then I went to Nana Patekar. He gave me a few pointers that I incorporated into the film. He asked me, “What’s my backstory?” There was no backstory at this point. That’s where we wrote (the flashback). He explained, “I should have a reason for it.” So we immediately told the backstory and left him out (laughs)!”
Naseeruddin Shah played the role of Shah Rukh Khan and Zayed Khan’s father, but he too was considered for Raghavan. At this point, Farah dropped an interesting tidbit: “Naseeruddin was called Shekhar because of Shekhar Kapur who did it Masoom (1983),” adding that the cult film and Naseeruddin’s title were very similar.
