Manchester United failed to capitalize on their 4-2 win over Sheffield United on Wednesday and were held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley at Old Trafford in the Premier League.
Both teams had plenty of chances in the first half, with United controlling large parts of the game and going close on a few occasions; Alejandro Garnacho fired a shot over the bar and Bruno Fernandes rattled the woodwork with a well-struck volley.
The Clarets also enjoyed some extended spells of possession, although they failed to capitalize, with Andre Onana making an excellent save to deny Lyle Foster.
Thanks to Antony’s first Premier League goal of the season, a well-crafted finish that he fired low and hard into the bottom corner, Erik ten Hag’s side finally managed to break the stalemate. But just eight minutes later, Burnley equalized from a penalty through Zeki Amdouni.
A clumsy header from Casemiro and a foul from Onana gave the 12-year-old Swiss attacker the chance to grab a crucial point for Burnley, which he took advantage of well into the bottom right corner.
It was definitely a tough game for United, although one of their stars in particular had an unforgettable afternoon at Old Trafford.
Andre Onana’s stats against Burnley
It was certainly a mixed performance from United’s number 24 Onana. The aforementioned save against Foster was great and, according to Sofascore, one of six he made, including four from shots inside the penalty area.
However, the Cameroonian’s foul on Amdouni, who converted the penalty a few moments later, was a serious mistake. Admittedly, Casemiro’s poor defensive attempts didn’t help him, but it was a hasty shot attempt that only saw him wave his arms to give away the foul.
Other than that, it was a good performance from Onana. Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News rated the former Ajax and Inter goalkeeper 6/10 after the game and described his performance leading up to his penalty as “a game-winning performance”.
As usual, Onana is always happy to be involved in the game and had a total of 56 touches of the ball, which was only bettered by four United players. The centre-back also stuck to the long-ball, out-of-the-back style of play that he has been asked to play this season.
Onana completed seven long balls and totaled 30/45 passes. Notably, he has found a United team-mate four times, more than any other player has managed on the pitch.
Rasmus Hojlund’s stats against Burnley
The man in question here is Rasmus Hojlund, who actually received more passes from Onana than any other player, four, according to Statman Dave
It was such a tough afternoon for United’s number 11 that he didn’t even manage to get a shot on target, let alone a shot on target. This is perhaps surprising considering Fernandes created an incredible nine chances. Hojlund also completed only three of his six attempted passes.
Football Insider highlighted Hojlund’s lack of service in the post-match review, where the publication gave the Dane a 2/10 and said he was “isolated and unfit for duty”.
It has been a difficult time for Hojlund of late, with his last goal against Sheffield United being his first since a brace away at Luton on February 18. Since that game he has scored one goal in ten games for club and country.
That’s a run Hojlund will be looking to change a week from now on Monday, as United’s next game is a trip to Crystal Palace. The Red Devils face a difficult run of games and with the FA Cup final at the end of the season they will definitely be hoping they can put together a strong run and build momentum ahead of the big Manchester derby showdown at Wembley .
